Just popped my first Guiness can of beer with the thingy in it
And poured it out, and drank it - definitely not as good as on tap, and I was surprised at the liminality of the head on the beer. Not very much at all.

Still, even at less than the tapper, it's good beer.

But I don't think I'll ever buy a can of it again, even with the draught device in it.

Next step is to cut the can open and see what the thingybob is!

It's a little plastic ball, if memory serves me correctly... you can play beer pong with them once you're done with the Guinness :D

5. Anyone have any comments on the taste?
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 07:06 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Thanks for the info about the widgets! But what about your experience with the taste?

I've never had real Guiness ina real Irish pub, but, when I lived in Michigan there was a pub that had it on tap. Not the same as in Ireland, I'm told, but, much as I think MI was a stinkhole, I'll give it credit that it had at least one place with Guiness on tap, even if is weakened americanized Guiness. Bloody tasty it was, with a huge thick head o' foam.

This can doesn't taste like that - I can taste, in the subterranean levels of the beer, what I remember from my time in MI and other bottles of Guiness I've had - but I'm thinking the idea of putting it in a can is a lost idea.

6. If we're talking beers here...
I'll take Duvel, thanks. Best ale I've ever had. EVER. Belgian, of course.

Yum....might have to stop at Trader Joe's and pick some up to drink during the game tonight.

Didn't know that about the new Guiness built-in draught thingie...sounds interesting.

8. Try the domestic beer, Dortmunder Gold
Not bad at all.

I remember a Guiness billboard in Kenya. It had a shirtless muscular Kenyan man. He was flexing his muscles. The text was, "Guiness makes you strong."

9. Boddington's is another English brand
with the gas ball inside. The first time I tried one was quite a surprise. Thing went wild with foam.

But one problem was that I had placed a can in the freezer for a quick chill while I started the grill. Beer was extremely bitter.

Tried a 2nd one that was warmer. That one was pretty tasty.

I took a case with me on ice to the races. The beer was fine - it doesn't suffer from being warm. Plus the cans are > 16 oz. Twenty four cans is a lot of beer in one afternoon.

Boddington's: "The cream of Manchester"

10. Isn't there a statement on the package stating NOT to pour the ale out?
You might want to check into that. It should be on the can somewhere. :-)

11. No, it says to pour it out immediately into a glass

Will try another one. Not to enjoy it - now it's about scientific research. :-)

p.s. - get my email?

13. Hmmm...must be a different can then.
I was at a bar watching last year's super bowl. I noticed the little warning not to pour out the ale right after I poured it into a glass. :D

Maybe they are doing something different now. In the name of science, I suggest a trip to Ireland to establish a baseline.

14. I love the baseline suggestion
Wouldn't be good science without it!

Yes, i think these draught ball cans are something new (and with the way that I follow current trends in culture, "something new" could mean in the last two years)./

it says, explicitly and I quote: "To experience the perfect pint of Guinness draught, chill the can for at least 3 hours. open it and immediately piour the beer gently into a glass. Wait for a few monehts foryour pint to settle, forming the unique thick creamy head and deep, black body."

Of course, the cans aren't pints - they're 14.9 ounces.

15. 14.9 ounces? What heresy is this?
It's Guinness - it should be an Imperial Pint - 20oz.

My parents just got back from Europe. One of their stops was the Guinness brewery. Free samples.

16. a metric fuckload would be better, but yes, 14.9 ounces IS heresy
It's such an odd amount. Why not just make it 16 ounces? Certainly the ball takes up some space, but it isn't taking up enough space to make me think that the can is 16 ounces but after ball displacement is down to 14.9.
