I'm about to lose my home--wish me luck!
The building where I live was sold, so we've all been evicted. I need to find a new place to live by the end of this month. Fortunately, the rental market in San Francisco is much better than it used to be, but it's still a major bummer.

I'm in school right now, so I need a place that's convenient to both City College and to my job in North Beach, and I need roommates who are clean, quiet, drama-free and sane (I can't afford my own place). And because I'm in school, I don't have unlimited time to go house-hunting.

Oh well. Anyone know a house in SF that needs a roommate?

4. "Clusterfuck" is exactly the right word for the situation I'm leaving
My soon-to-be-former home was one of three units in a building, and it was under a tenancy-in-common arrangement. By that, I mean that the person who was technically my landlord was one of my roommates, and he owned the unit but was only a part-owner of the building along with the other two units' owners. One of the other owners is in dire financial trouble, and the other just recently got laid off, so my roommate/landlord was the only one of the three who would have preferred not to sell just yet.

So, yeah, it's indeed quite a clusterfuck, and a complicated one at that.

7. clusterfuck
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 02:56 PM by chickenscratching
is that a common phrase?
i hadn't heard it until i read 'america to book' by jon stewart & co.
do you konw if he started it?
regardless, the word 'fuck' has been transformed magnificently since cluster was added to it, now you get that extra punch with the 'c' and 't'. nice.

10. I've seen that word around for at least a decade
I'm sure it predates Jon Stewart.

17. I heard it in the Navy
over 25 years ago. It's a great term, along with SNAFU, circle-jerk (who's pivot man?) and other terms. Who says the military can't be fun?

11. It's a military term that has migrated.
I've heard it most of my life, being a brat and all.

Similar to What the Fuck, Over? and SNAFU and ID-ten-T forms.

3. All kinds, friend, all kinds.
Your question sounds like an opener for a very rude joke.

5. Welcome to DU...
Something behind that question, or do you really think there aren't a lot of schools in San Francisco?

12. Heh. I just assumed that he was asking an innocent question
and meant to say "where are you going to school and what are you studying" and just happened to be inarticulate and illiterate. I didn't think there was some other hidden meaning to the question.

Well, I'll be waiting for the tombstone to appear soon.

6. Every kind of school is in San Francisco.
I go to City College, where I'm a computer science major (but taking math and physics classes this semester).

It may be "only" a local junior community college, but it's kicking my ass every bit as much as Wesleyan University (my undergrad alma mater where I got a B.A. in political science) ever did.

15. Not that this helps at all...
But I thought that was illegal. I thought when a rental property sold in California, the new owners had to honor the rental contracts.

Obviously I'm wrong. Sorry this happened to you.

city. I hope you find a nice place.

21. How long ago did they give you notice? Legally, they're supposed to give
AT LEAST one YEAR when the building's been sold, and they're either tearing it down, or relocating tennants. Also, they're required by law to give you moving costs, AND usually about the equivalent of one year's rent...as an incentive.

If they've offered you none of these, I suggest you go to a neighborhood Tenant Right clinic (most accept donations...whatever you can afford)...and find out your rights. In California, Tenant rights are protected more than most places. They can't just throw you out. They have to 3 day notice you, then (I think) 10-day notice you, then serve you with the formal Eviction Complaint...which has a Court Case Number on it. To which you then HAVE to "Answer" the Eviction with a 1-page Answer form you can get at the Clerk's office. THis needs to be formally filed with the Clerk (approx. $100), and a copy PROPERLY served on Landlord. This "buys" you at least 30 days until a Hearing. Then, up to several more months, if you were IMPROPERLY noticed, or not compensated for your move by the buyers of the building. Most landlords count on tenants NOT knowing their rights, and so accidentally do NOT do the process correctly. And so, this can buy you some time until you find a place, and/or are properly compensated for the inconvenience of the move by the new buyers of the building.

Do NOT relinquish your rights. And do NOT fail to "Answer" the Eviction Complaint (should one be filed and served on you). You have 5 Court Days to do so. If you fail to do so, and stay in the unit, you can then be locked out by the Sheriffs.

Good luck!
