Subject: Re: 1979 Album Survivor, Semifinals

I say, if it sounds good, I don't care at all if it doesn't break any new ground. I prefer Thorogood's version of "Who Do You Love" to Bo Diddley's version, for instance.

I say, if somebody can paint the Mona Lisa by numbers, and it looks as good as the original painting, what's the difference? They are both equally good. The fact that the "paint by numbers" piece showed no originality is irrelevant as to how good each painting is.

6. I'll play along. The Destroyers v Diddley example sucks!
But what about the Tori Amos version of "Smells Like Teen Spirtit"...or if you are older, Tina Turner's "Help" on the initial vinyl release of "Private Dancer"? Both totally different than the originals. How about Cocker's version of "With a little Help..."?
If a song is covered from a different perspective, is it not an homage to the talent of both writer and performer? Now, these may be only a small minority of cover tunes, but your blanket nose-thumbing is a bit harsh! Oh, and how about Annie Lennox doing "Train in Vain"?...a cover can be done well, and become almost a new song, but certainly some are a work of art.

7. Tina Turner's remake of "Help" is breathtaking!
She converted the Beatles' jangly pop rocker into a torch song to be reckoned with. I never heard any quotes from the surviving Beatles about Tina's recording of their hit, but I'll bet they loved it!
