I'm eavesdropping on my son...
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 07:39 PM by Maddy McCall
I'm in the den, and he's got the door to his bedroom open--I can hear everything he's saying--and he's talking on the phone to his eleven-year-old friend. (Both are 11.)

They are talking politics! My kid is telling the kid on the phone that "John Kerry started the Lance Armstrong bracelet fad." Then he defined "fad" for his friend.

Now they are talking about "Katie" wearing John Deere stuff, and how stupid it is that "the preps" now think those clothes are cool.

His friend then asked him why he doesn't like any Republicans. My kid said, "I'm not talking about people we know...I'm talking about stupid republican politicians that don't care how many soldiers die in battle so that people can have gas for their SUVs."

Wonder where he gets all of this? (About the John Deere thing, I could care less, but the rest sounds faintly familiar.) :7

2. LOL!
Well, I usually don't listen to their phone conversations, but his door was open and I could hear him very clearly, so I stopped what I was doing and listened. :-)

Yeah, he's a cool kid. :-)

7. Don't know.
Some kids rebel and some don't. Are you predicting that he's going to become a right-wing conservative Republican? I'd say "fat chance."

13. Thanks, sweetie.
Yep, and he's always stood up for himself, without any prodding for me.

Glad to see you back on DU. :hi:

14. I hope not
and most kids don't choose politics to rebel. 11 is amazingly young to be interested at all.

I have some friends with a four year old who says "Tear down that wall!" but its pretty obvious where she heard it. ;)

18. You can't compare a 4-year-old to an eleven-year-old...
Most four-year-olds can't read and aren't tuned into the world around them. My eleven-year-old would rather watch Keith Olbermann than cartoons. He reads current events and newspapers, and he watches the news on TV. Sure, I've fostered many of his values, but he chooses his political views. My parents allowed the same of me, and I allow the same of my son.

23. My kids went through the rebellion stage,
challenging me all the time, taking outrageous positions, and demanding to be taken seriously. They knew where my buttons were and pushed them all the time. They never challenged the values I taught them. Kids also have an instinct for where the ultimate button is. The one that changes a loving, pissed off, sometimes tyranical, parent, into a steely eyed stranger that doesn't know you.

8. Good kid!
Gooood kid!

I hope I have as much luck. I had my 2 year old saying "John Kerry good one" before the election. It broke my heart to (over and over) try to expalin that John Kerry lost.

17. Yup, but it's a he :)
That was his 2nd haircut. One of my all time favorite photos. My wife and I fight over who actually took it. I only wish I had gotten more of the background in there ( <-- Note how I'm claiming that I took the photo), like the "tools of the craft".

My mother says "He's almost too pretty to be a boy", whatever that means.

Anyway, thanks for the compliment! I hope to have him a raving progressive by the time he's 11!

15. Mine was ridiculed in the 2000 and 2004 mock elections at school...
for being either the only kid, or one of two kids in his class who voted for Kerry. And he wasn't ashamed about it, either.

Tell little BAL that he's one cool kid and to ignore the stupid bullies.

21. Maddy, we're going to put you in charge of --
-- raising GOP kids so they turn out like your son and not like they do now.

I hope your son's friend has the good sense to follow your son's lead, since your son has been lucky enough to have your lead to follow.

Keep on keepin' on & doin' it right.

22. Actually, the kid IS claiming to be a Democrat...
and his parents are Republicans. Sad thing is, I don't want them to think that I inculcate him over here, BUT when he says something based on Republican dogma, I don't hesitate to present my opinion. :-)

The history teacher in me, though, always presents both sides of the issue and then shows him why Democrats are always right. ;-) (I jest.)
