Goodbye, Martha
http://www.wvgazette.com/section/News/2005030237

It’s been a good run for the town of Alderson, but come Friday, it will be time to say goodbye to inmate 55170-054 and let everyone get on with their lives.

Since Oct. 8, when Martha Stewart checked into Federal Prison Camp Alderson, a number of good things have happened to this otherwise sleepy Greenbrier River town.

Alderson’s Store has sold more than 1,200 “West Virginia Living — It’s a Good Thing” souvenir shirts, including several to Stewart’s relatives and pals, like former Texas Gov. Ann Richards.

1. Some people take piss
and make it into lemonade. Martha Stewart is one of those people.

4. Good luck Martha!
It's great to see the feds' witch hunt and demonization of a strong independent woman only served to strengthen her and increase her popularity.

Now that they've punished that horrible criminal, maybe they can pay some attention to Ken Lay.

8. Being in prison has improved her image.
I, for one, like her better now. Wonder how that works.

9. I feel the same - I guess the Feds really made a role model out of her
:) Kids go to prison when you shouldn't have to and you'll be respected (like Martha) or don't go to prison when you should (Laura, Bush, Cheney et al) and get no respect but lots of false praise

11. Sure it was a good career move, but...
Now that we've taught that reprobate Martha a lesson, let's go after some shoplifters and pillow-tag rippers. Goodness knows, we can't have these miscreants roaming the streets while self-respecting pillars of the community outsource jobs, award bonuses fellow Enron executives, and defraud investors.

What would become of this world? Next thing you know, the blue states have taken over and we're teaching homosexuality to first-graders, burning the flag, and promoting Godlessness.

...and what does such a person after having had her punishment? I'll tell you what:

It's enough to make me toss my cookies all over my new terrazzo flooring.

13. Sadly, you are right.
I was just commenting on the regular public view, and neglecting the implications of this. I know people who have softened previous views of Martha.

You point out correctly that this plays into the assault on the little guy that is going on and we should all be more aware, that it covers the big time crooks that have taken over.

Good that you are keeping us honest, and I shall make sure to bring this up in my conversations.

14. Actually, I'm feeling the same way...
I've gotten to feel a bit better about her also.

I never "hated" her the way some do, but she's become a particularly attractive, easy target for tiresome Jay Leno types and the like who love to bash her because it's less difficult than going after the Bush Cabinet or CEOs who have hurt the public with their irresponsibility and they can riff on a public perception of her that seems to build on an underlying insecurity. One can call her a "bitch" and giggle about it, as if they knew her personally, and the whole thing just smacks of misogyny. I've grown weary of it.

Can we pull back the camera a bit and take in the whole view? She's going to go on living in the public eye, who will continue to make cheap shots at her, and is bearing it with as much dignity as she is able. Let her be.

12. Me too. I admire her courage and her willingness just to take
her medicine rather than drag it out forever.

Now she can move on with her life, and it'll probably be better than ever. Hopefully she learned something in the big house that she can share with us.

10. My sincerest hope is that she becomes a radical liberal activist
Start foundations, hold rallies, bring attention to the deporable state of our prison system, etc.

I would just love to see her become a huge thorn in the side of the repukes...and if there's any woman who has the organizational skills and the motivation to really go at them, it's Martha Stewart.
