Freeper coworker calls himself "anti-socialist"
His reasons include what he calls the "utter failure of Switzerland's socialist state" and the "pitiful shape of Canada's healthcare system". Besides, he says, "if you need something serious done (medically) in Canada you come here to the US."

aghagh...I've stopped trying to reason with him and ask for his proof because he never concedes. Now I just try to change topics when he brings shit up. Problem is, he brings it up at least once a day.

And he knows I am a libertarian socialist so I think he does it to bug me.

Waiting for the day to end...

1. "Anti-socialist"?
Why doesn't he just say "fascist" and call it good?!

3. the Canadians may beg to differ about their "failed" health system
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 06:37 PM by jonnyblitz
My Canadian friends have no complaints! I would suggest OUR wonderful capitalist system is a failed system, profit being a priority over people's health needs.

11. What in heaven's name does that have to do with the fact that
millions of children in this country have no health insurance and don't get the proper treatment they need! No one is questioning the capabilities of our doctors, hospitals and nurses, but we are seriously questioning how those of a lower socio-economic status are consistently left out of the loop.

BTW - welcome to DU...I think.

30. Yeah, but I read on Newsmax about a guy...
who lived in Canada and was put on a waiting list for 23 years to treat appedicitis, and when he finally saw the doctor, they gave him a lobotomy by mistake. In Murka, doctors are perfect.

15. Can you even read? If you actually read that article you'd see
that the reason her parents brought her here has nothing to do with what they can afford and what they can't. Doctors here just happened to have been able to help her.

But doctors in other countries are ahead of ours in other areas of medicine.

So what does your article prove in relation to THIS thread?

Nothing.

Thanks for playing.

Huh? This is someone with a very peculiar obsession; ask 100 people to name a socialist country, and I bet NOT ONE of them would name Switzerland.

Where do you suppose he gets his information? Do they beam it down to him from the Black Helicopters?

It's no use trying to reason with them.

Meanwhile, in the real world, people in countries that have "socialist" healthcare would laugh in your face if you asked them if they wished they had a U.S.-style healthcare system.

Lower left corner of the political compass...Not saying it can/will be a reality, but it's my ideal utopia :)

Unfortunately, libertarian is often equated w/ right wing...not true.

44. Canada's health-care crisis.
Okay, if you walk into a Canadian emergency room with a broken thumb, you'll probably have to wait five hours before you get any attention.

But...if you come in with anything serious, or as a result of an accident or crime, you get treatment right away, BEFORE verifying if you can pay for it.

That's one RW argument which holds absolutely NO water whatsoever. Canada's health care system, for the record, is Provincially managed, not federal. Some provinces have completely free coverage for all medical, and some have partially user-subsidised, income-based fees (I'm in BC and pay $17 per month for the full medical services plan. As a relatively healthy 37 year old, that's probably a bit more than I draw from the service, but if I was a 48 year old single mother of two with cancer and the same income, I'd still only pay $17/mo, which would be a freakin' bargain!).

In any event, it's a two-tier system; there is private care at all levels in this country. If you want to pay a premium for immediate, private medical care, you have that option. If you don't, there's the public system, which is pretty effective.

Many of the services' costs are offset by user-fees. For example, if you have to be taken somewhere by ambulance, there's a bill you'll get a couple of months later for, like $60. I found this out after my mom was taken to the hospital last summer.

As far as I know, unless you're on Social Assistance, all dental care in Canada is private-only. There's no public dental health care plan.

Just ask him which country he'd rahter be shor in, Canada or the US.

Then remind him we don't have much gun violence, either. ;)
