1. I never got mine
They figured out that they were going to root in nerves....cut them out before they ever rooted, when I was 16.

7. That was how it worked with me.
Only one came in normally. I had it pulled.
Two of them were impacted and it was hell. No dental either, over $2,500 out of my pocket (dental didn't cover wisdom teeth).
I have one left, turned on it's side. I'm waiting until I get some dental that will cover it.

19. That's not true
I still have mine and they never give me any problems. When they were growing I felt like chewing on something the whole time but that was almost 15 years ago.

24. It depends on how they are coming in.
My teeth impacted, causing an abcess. I let mine go until I had a severe infection and had to go on antibiotics for it. Finally, I got up the guts to have them cut out.
If they are just a little achy, then she will be just fine. Either way, she needs to go to a dentist and find out.

5. Well, after 5 years of braces
They knew I wouldn't have space for wisdom teeth. The orthodontist saw where they were going to root, and sent me to an oral surgeon.

10. yeah, basically they suck...
The first came in early when I was 17 and it impacted and abscessed...I went to the oral surgeon and when he tried to extract it the crown shattered and he had to dig it out of my jaw with me under with just novacaine...The process was excrutiatingly painful!

However the other three appeared three years later and I had a different dentist....I went in one day after leaving work early and they hooked me up to some sort of IV containing sodium pentathol...I experienced about 5 seconds of total drug induced nirvana and next thing I remember I woke up groggy 60 minutes later with a mouthful of bloody gauze and a prescription for Percodan (the drug that made you not care if you were feeling pain or not)...

Altogether, a memorial but not pleasant memory!

11. Awwww...
Don't throw anything at me, but my wisdom teeth never grew in for some reason. Not having them is a lucky genetic thing in my family. I don't know why, but I am glad.

Here is a somewhat funny story (not funny ha ha, but funny odd)...when I was in school, the DARE officer had his wisdom teeth cut out and he had complications which required his mouth to be wired shut. He became addicted to perscription painkillers and was caught with a dealer a few months later. Needless to say, he was no longer our DARE officer after that. I was the only person in the class to get the irony of that one.

13. Wisdom teeth are not are friends!
My top ones are fine. My bottom ones were impacted and one abscessed and effected the central nerve that caused one side of my face to appear as if I'd had a stroke! See if you need yours removed and if you do just do it. I know it's scary, but it's better to take care of it now.

28. My upper wisdom teeth are kind of weird
they're higher up than the rest of my upper teeth, and when my tongue moves upward, I can feel the bottom of the wisdom teeth.

My lower wisdom teeth are kind of whacked out. One came in, but it's on the upper part of my lower jaw, so it peeks out sideways, and there's a gap between it and my bottom molar, so food falls in there pretty easily. I have to use a tooth pick to get the food out, and I gargle constantly every time I brush my teeth to make sure the food particles are out.

The other bottom wisdom tooth hasn't come in yet.

36. Straight Talk from a sissy
You have to have a good dentist advise whether they can stay or should be removed.

I had a good oral surgeon, who made me high as a kite first, before he knocked me senseless. When I woke up, I was still kinda high, but the anaesthetics were still doing their thing. I was weak, but ambulatory, and was out of there in a few hours. Intense pain came as the anaesthetic wore off -- but HEY! -- that's why they give you Demerol, which is the neutron bomb to tooth extraction pain. So you sleep some.

My sister had teeth extracted that looked like they belonged in the jaw of a stallion -- and that girl was EATING LUNCH when she got home, no trouble, just some discomfort.Maybe she missed a day of school.

Me -- they pulled out these teeny prosimian teeth from me, but the next few days were uncomfortable. No lunch for me for days -- I did Jello and broth and ice cream, which was okay with me. But that's what Demerol is for. Use it, Soldier! It hurts, but it is not awful -- and remember -- this is a first hand account from a sissy. You'll be able to handle it (with help from Sister Demerol). About a week after words, you develop "morgue mouth" when tissues slough off, but it is easy to deal with, if a bit icky.

PS - be sure you have some cool off-beat videos to watch while you are under the influence of the Demerol.

Welcome to the frontlines of evolutionary change. Modern people are evolving to have less space for molars. Change is never easy. Lucky for you, you are young, and you'll be over this procedure in no time. It's
worth it, my dea, even if it is not one the surface a happy picnic. Advantages outweigh inconvenience and the minor pain. This is a SISSY talkin' to ya -- nothing stoic about me, but it was okay to go through.

Good luck.

38. Cool.
So basically what I got form that is, if I have to have them removed make sure my house is loaded with ice cream, jello and wacky movies that I can enjoy while high on Demerol. Sounds pretty good to me. LOL! ;)

46. Yup, it's an evolutionary thing.
The most advanced don't even have wisdom teeth.

Mine came in with only slight discomfort & are still there. I'm long-jawed & long headed; since women's hats usually come in one size, they're usually too small for me. My toes are also quite long--perhaps there's a Cro-Magnon in the woodpile!

For those in the middle (evolutionarily), the teeth probably need to come out. I've known some people who had horror stories & others who had no problems at all. Get a good oral surgeon & good drugs!
