16. Our team was the Trojans, too, and I'm sure that

the boys laughed about it among themselves but never in front of girls. Of course, most of us girls knew what Trojans were, too, but it wasn't something kids joked about in the mid-sixties, probably because pregnancy wasn't funny. Kids had sex and used rubbers but they didn't talk about it as much as kids do today. The bad news is my high school students were less informed in the eighties and nineties about contraception than most of us in the sixties.

Sorry about your Pops, it's really hard to take care of someone. We did it with my mother-in-law, who had ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and it's very, very hard. I think it would be even worse when the person you love has Alzheimer's; we've had no experience with that.

You take good care of yourself.

I went to a couple high schools and a couple colleges, but I never had a good mascot....

Unicorns - all girls high school

Stallions - the girls were the Lady Stallions (don't even try to figure out how a stallion can be a lady)

Presidents - for many years after they started admitting women, they called the women the First Ladies (apparently a female could never be a president)

Zips - Zip is a kangaroo, but it looks more like a cow

52. My elementary school had the most ridiculous mascot of all
I only went to public elementary school from K-2, and since we were the only school in the district without a mascot, the powers that be decided we should be the ALFs (as in Alien Life Form; you know, that furry little guy who had that hit sitcom on NBC on Monday nights back in the late 80s). About 7-8 years after I left that school, I went back there for some reason (I probably was accompanying my parents on their way to vote, since the school used to be our polling place. I still wasn't old enough to vote, but already interested in politics by then). I kid you not, there was still a giant paper ALF on the wall when you entered. Just a few years ago though, they officially renamed themselves the Jaguars :).

Arthur Hill High School, Saginaw, Michigan. The only "Lumberjacks" in the state of Michigan.
John
In 1973, the Lumberjacks became (and still are) the only HS football team in Michigan history to go an entire season undefeated, untied and unscored upon (9-0, 443-0).
ON EDIT: Actually, we are also (officially) known as the Hillites. I wonder how many high schools have two different, interchangeable nicknames?

Polar Pep Song

Out of the North comes the Polar Bear, Venturing Forth From her Guarded lair.

Our warriors in the fray are ready for the foe; This is our happy day, we'll watch them as they go.

Send up a cheer for the Maroon and Gold. We never fear for our defenders bold.

We'll win the game, defend our fame. And know the reason why

Our voice in song both loud and long we raise up to the sky.

Come on and sing and make the welkin ring!

Come on and fight, fight, fight, North High!

I went to a Lutheran High School. I remember one day in Western Civ class everyone was condemning Muslim holy wars during a class discussion. This was way before 9/11. I pointed out that our own team mascot was named after a bunch of people who engaged in a holy war. I don't think most of them saw the irony in that.
