Because we all come from different backgrounds. Some have not embraced the use of such terms and see it as vulgar and antisocial.

Profane words are empowered beyond their own merrit by such behaviour and individuals that come from social circles that have not dismantled this false power are going to be hit by them all the harder.

The nature and pace of a conversation take on an identity of their own. Like a good friend we try to maintain a level of conversation that we are comfortable with. Moving into conversation styles we are unfamiliar with, while liberating for some, can be quite intimidating for others.

A social group forms its own nuance and rythm of conversing. Those from the outside will feel uneasy if they are not fully up to speed on that dialect. If they percieve the forum as not being the exclusive territory of certain groups they may act as if it were epxected to be a public forum and as such not encumbered by such group specific lingo.

In the end the reason people whine about such matters is because they want to be part of the process but the language and pace of some such groups can be problematic for them. They don't feel as if they fit and this turns to stress. They see the source of the stress as being the group using the language and they speak out about it.

As an apprentice, many moons ago, I picked up the swearing habit from working with 30 mechanics, yup THIRTY in the shop where I started, and a bit of a rough bunch at that . . .

Wantin to be "one of da boys" sorta thing, it wasn't long b4 every second or third word coming out of my mouth was "f this", "that c-suckin thing" and so on

I got so bad that when in public, I was reminded more than once that I had just sworn, and wasn't even aware of it.

Not wanting to sound vulgar, I "chastised" myself each time I caught myself swearing, even if alone

I still have occasion to discipline myself, but never "slip" in public anymore.

That's my "story" for what it's worth
