Poll question: After your periods, do you
use one space or two?

2. I tried to stick with two for the longest time.
I finally got 'corrected' one too many times... might as well start saying nukular, now.

3. Two spaces are used on manual typewriters with monospaced characters...
... when the proportional-spaced letters of the IMB-selectric and word processors became more common, the double space after a period became less common.

I think.

If I'm wrong, surely someone will correct me.

7. I think you are right Allen, I tried to continue once word processors
replaced typing, but they correct you, so I've finally stopped.

4. It depends.
Use one space if using a proportional font, two if using a fixed.

5. I'm a technical writer...
We used to use 2 spaces. Once we started putting more and more documentation on the web, we switched to only one space. During doc conversion, one of the spaces was being eliminated, anyway. I still find myself occasionally using 2, but it always gets edited back to one.

11. One! One! One!
Finally. I hated having to have 2 spaces in there - because I always forgot somewhere in what I was typing.

12. I'm trying to get into the habit of one. Two was taught most of the way
through my schoolyears, but any typography book will tell you one is the correct amount.

15. It's a difference of convention
between a fixed-space typewritten manuscript and a typeset document. Nowadays most word processors produce documents mimicking typesetting, so two spaces are less necessary for readability.

I learned the habit of typing two spaces so long ago (I had a boss in the mid-80s who insisted on it) that I can't unlearn it now.

13. ....visit the mikvah?
Orthodox Jewish women who observe taharat ha-mishpachah (family purity laws) immerse themselves in a mikvah (ritual pool) at a certain time after their periods. I suppose that's also inserting space, but in a different sense of the word.

16. They abstain from marital relations
but do not withdraw from the family altogether. I'm not an Orthodox Jew, however, so I don't know the details of Jewish law concerning this. (I'm a gentile learning about Judaism in a class at our synagogue.)
