people referring to their total amount or just the "bad" cholesterol count. For example my "good" amount(HDL) is 190 but my "bad" (LDL) is 120 giving me a total of 310 which is considered not good but to me the 120 amount doesn't seem that bad.

is that newest guidelines are:
Total Cholesterol should be <160 HDL (good) >40 LDL (bad) <70
Are you using old measurements?
