Any DU Gardeners out there?
Can I grow a Tea Plant in Ohio?

I have become a green tea fanatic, and I think I am addicted :D. Anyways, I am building a good size garden this year and was wondering if it is possible to grow tea in Ohio and where I could get starts and such and how to grow them, my searches on the net have turned up nothing relavent lately. Can anyone help?

1. I believe it's too cold in the winter to grow tea in ohio. you'd have
be in the tropics actually.
sorry.

7. i know they need a lot of rain.... hmmm.
it could get really interesting in your glass house. you know, steamy.
i do know that camellias, the most gogeous flowers in the world are related to tea, maybe you would/ could love drinking it's leaves....

but Nuccio's nursery in Altadena are the shit when it comes to that, i bet they would know more about tea. and how the leaves taste.

4. You can grow anything, anywhere.
The question you seem to be asking is can you grow it outdoors with no artificial help. That I don't know. Get on google and search the web for gardening forums, and go to the library. Every plant has different needs.

I'm just getting into growing myself, I've growing stuff indoors and outdoors, and learning all I can. The closest to green tea I have is probably Stevia, and it takes a LOT of light.

6. check for the State Agricultural Extension Service
it is most likely linked somehow to Ohio State University's website, since OSU is the land grant college of Ohio.

the Texas one is linked to Texas A&M's website.

try googling Ohio Agricultural Extension Services you should get a ton of links.

These people will know about any and all things that will grow in Ohio.

and tea grows in tropical areas, however it also grows at high elevations ..which means warm days and cool nights.

Texas is quite warm and very bright but I don't think tea would make it here simply because we don't get very good day/night differential in our growing seasons. Actually we don't get much in the winter either, but even less in spring, summer and fall. Particularly in summer, which is why it feels so hot here all the time in summer...it doesn't cool down at night.
