Use the damn $90 Littermaid, you scurvy little poopers!
The other day I purchased my kitties a Littermaid Plus. They'll get in, but jump out without doing their business, instead returning to their usual boxes. After trying to acclimate them to the Littermaid to no avail, I have removed their regular boxes so they'll have no choice. They're very good about using the litter boxes; I hope they'll resign themselves to the change. I used to have two of these things when we lived in Wichita; I sold them to a friend. The cats used them then. Spoiled, I guess.

1. I had one of those
my cats were fine with it until the damn thing quit working. I'm reluctant to spend another $80+ to deal with cat poop but I hate cleaning out the current box.

4. Is the "plus" a bigger size?
I've got two huge cats who barely fit in a standard litter box. I seen the Littermaid in stores. Does it really work? How often do you have to empty the container. I have three cats.

5. It's not bigger
It just comes with extra stuff (carbon filters, scoop, paw cleaning ramp). They do work like a charm. I had 2 of them before because we used to have 4 cats (2 have since died, sadly). It rakes up the clumbs and lifts them into a receptacle. How often you change it depends on how often they use it and the receptacle fills up (it comes with some refills, and refills are available separately).

6. It might help to put some litter from the old boxes into the new one
so they can identify and follow their own smell.

7. we could not use the ones we got.
One of them likes to watch it run the rake so she would jump in and out and then wait for it to run, and then one of our others hates clean litter. I swear she holds back a little just so if we clean the cat box she can make it dirty immediately, well everytime that thing ran she had to go in there and mess the litter. so we had a cat running her self ragged trying to keep the cat box dirty. They burned out one of the motors on those things doing that. it just stopped one day right in the middle of the box, and would not run anymore.

9. One of my cats growls and fights with the arm of the auto poop boxe
Got a real thing about it. Very male cat, wants to dominate just about everything and thinks the box is stuck up.

11. How very unkind of you, to set those little darlings up for
repetitive stress injury and dehydration! Bad, bad, because you also made them love it. All while trying to satisfy your self-centered need for less manual labor and a clean smelling home. Now, by not purchasing the 80 dollar device to replace the one you probably sabotaged, you deprive those poor little things the cat equivalent of a home entertainment center.

I can't even fathom the cruelty. I am simply in tears to hear this. I tell you, I am crying over this entire thread.

12. Have you ever laid in bed and listened to the damn thing run...
over and over and over. It is very annoying and I am enough entertainment for them. They seem to get great entertainment from sitting and glaring at me. I live in a house full of females. OH JOY!!! I am always in trouble with one of them human or feline. I get no respect around here.

17. You are welcome.
Snickers liked to watch and Tiger can not stand clean litter. I am serious we could wait til she has just finished, and has not drank anything or ate anything and clean the box and she is immediately in there. I swear she is cutting it off short just to be prepared for when we clean them.

10. I had a cat who used the Mega Littermaid
and didn't bother to cover up her crap! She ended up ruining the mechanism because her droppings caused it to burn the motor....

13. You guys are killing me!!!!!!
I've seen those and thought "Wow, I want one!!" (I have three cats, and feel like the litterboxes are never clean enough!)

You have successfully changed my mind. My cats sit and watch me scoop the boxes, following me from one to the other. As soon as both are clean, they race for the boxes. Everybody wants to be the first one in...yet they wait until they're both cleaned. I never thought of it from the angle of not being able to stand a clean litter box, and having to constantly dirty it...I thought everybody wanted to be the first to the clean litter! I have visions of a burned motor from constant running.

As for them not wanting to use it....When Dora was pregnant with her last litter, and we knew she was about to pop, we set up a litter box in the master bathroom, and kept her confined to the bedroom/bathroom area. she would wake me up in the middle of the night, pawing at the bedroom door (Good kitty, no claws...just an annoying noise!), and if that didn't work, she'd nuzzle my face until I got up. One of the other cats snuck into the room one day and used the box...after that, Dora had no problem using it.

I'd say put some poop from an original box in there, so they understand it's theirs.

16. i also have a fat ass cat that I strongly suspect would not
be able to get his lard butt into the LitterMaid. We had to go out and buy Sterilite Crates to get something he can poop in and keep his tail out of the way at the same time.

19. UPDATE
Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 11:38 PM by DeposeTheBoyKing
I finally relented and, after cleaning their super-sized regular box, put in some regular litter mixed with the "special" Littermaid litter I laid out $10 for and put it next to the Littermaid. They BOTH promptly climbed in and peed simultaneously. Wish I'd have been able to grab the camera in time. I guess I've wasted $90; it certainly isn't the first time in my life I've wasted money. I'm glad my husband doesn't visit DU; he'd have my head posted on a stick on the Fort Duquesne Bridge.
