Baseball question
I'm not a religious baseball fan...when the teams I like are on I'll watch or flip back and forth..until the world series anyway..
So I don't know the history of the CUbs/White Sox...who was first?

DO they play in the same field?

Which one reprents which area?

Any other interesting tidbits too would be nice

3. Cubs are on the North side
and they play at Wrigley Field. The White sox play on the South side and (New) Comisky Park. The Cubs are older since the National League is about 20 years older than the American League.

2. From a former Chicagoan
Edited on Mon Oct-06-03 11:39 AM by pmbryant
The Cubs are the older team, but both teams are ancient. I believe the Cubs' history dates back to the 1870s. They were originally known as the 'White Stockings', I believe. The 'Cubs' name didn't become their tag until early in the 20th century, I believe. (My recollection of that particular bit of history could be off, though.)

They definitely do not play on the same field. The Cubs play at beautiful, historic Wrigley Field (built around 1914-15), while the Sox play at Rent-a-Name generic stadium (built way back in 1990 or so). ;-)

The Cubs traditionally represent the north side of Chicago, and the Sox the south side.

The Cubs haven't won a world series since 1908 and the White Sox haven't won one since 1917. The Sox are still paying the price for the fix in the World Series 1919, the famous 'Black Sox' scandal involving Shoeless Joe Jackson etc.

I grew up going to games at Wrigley Field (since 1977), so I am obviously a bit partisan on Cubs/Sox matters. :-)

Not this again.

Back then, players on lots of teams were throwing games. The "Black Sox" investigation initially began as an investigation into Cub players who were throwing games.

Also, there is a book out on the 1918 World Series that indicates that sportswriters at the time suspected that this series was also thrown - by the Cubs. I believe Bill Veeck's Hustler's Handbook also mentions a "World Series fixer" on the Cubs.

The players were horribly abused and badly paid back then.

15. Well, the 1919 scandal is the one everyone knows about
I've never heard of the 1918 one. Don't tell Red Sox fans about it, for if the Cubs did indeed throw that series, it kind of taints the last World Series the Red Sox won. ;-)

There were a lot of problems with fixing games back in that era.

13. Usually we use curling shoes
Because you are walkin gon ice..but the ice is grippy unless you have good curling shoes..so bare feet would probably stick

5. They don't play at the same field
The Cubbies play at Wrigley Field and the White Sox play at Cellular Field (used to be Comiskey Park - sigh, fucking corporate sponsorships...grr).

6. A start...
1. The Cubs are older, as is the National League... hence the term "Senior Circuit".
2. The Cubs play in beautiful Wrigley Field, named for the former owner (of chewing gum fame).
3. The Sox play in a "municipal" (tax payer funded) stadium formerly known as Comisky Park, now called US Cellular Field (The Cell), and should be called Bill Veeck Stadium.
4. Cubs represent North Side of town, Sox the south side.

Other tidbits:

Wrigley has been called the world's largest daycare center, The Cell the world's largest saloon.

Others will add more...

8. From memory
The National League is older than the American League. The American league was started in(I believe) in 1901, the National earlier, 1887(?). Both Chicago teams were probably charter members. The Cubs have played at Wrigley for years, and I believe Wrigley is the oldest park in the major leagues. The White Sox play at Comiskey Park, a new park sporting the same name as the older field. I don't know the old Comiskey Parks age, but it was probably built in the 1910s. It was the site of the first baseball All Star game in 1933(?).

12. I think Fenway Park is a few years older than Wrigley
But I could be wrong. They were built within a few years of each other, so they are essentially the same age.

Old Comiskey was built in 1910 or so. I went to a handful of games there in the 70s and 80s and it was nothing special, as I recall, except for being really old.

I don't know what the new Sox stadium is like, but it doesn't sound like anything special either from what I've heard.

19. I think you're right
And, I just remembered that Yankee Stadium has been remodeled but it opened on the site in 1923, being, truly, the house that Ruth built. Dodger Stadium, opened in April 1962, is the second oldest park in the National League. Fenway, Wrigley, and Yankee stadium are the only parks not built in the last 40 years?

11. Cubs were first
They were originally called the "White Stockings" but they were the forerunners of what are now known as Cubs. They were called the "Colts" and the "Orphans" at various times too. The Cubs haven't appeared in a World Series since 1945 and haven't won one since 1908. The White Sox play at U.S. Cellular Field, formerly known as Comiskey Park. The stadium is about 10 or maybe 15 years old and is not a real nice place to be. The Cubs play at Wrigley Field, 1060 West Addison, Chicago, IL. It is a nice day at the park for most. True Cub fans are incredibly resilient and knowledgeabe, as are true White Sox fans. The Sox were last in the Series in 1959 I believe. Overall, these two clubs have a dismal history of championships, but a rich and interesting history overall. Hope this helps. GO CUBS!!!!!!!

14. A Little History
The Cubs play in the NL and the Sox play in the AL.

The Cubs have one of the most storied histories of futility in baseball.

The White Sox moved from St. Paul to Chicago in 1900, a few years after the Cubs had been around town (founded in 1874 as the Chicago White Stockings, name changed to Cubs in 1876).

The only all-Chicago World Series was 1906.

17. your nickname is part of Cubs history
the late Cubs announcer Jack Brickhouse's trademark call was "Hey hey!"

I think but I'm not sure that he also called games for the Sox, but he's much closer associated with the Cubs.
