Any Steve Nash fans here?
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 12:22 AM by borlis
My almost 12 year old son has been a huge fan for about 3 years now. I have to admit he is really fun to watch. Last week we went to Milwaukee to see the Suns/Bucks and we both had a really good time. I've been reading up on him a little and learned he is a great humanitarian also. He buys up blocks of tickets for home games and gives them to local charities. Did any of you ever meet or get to shake his hand? My son is just dying to get close enough to get a "real" autograph, not a purchased one like he has.

1. I became a Suns fan because of Nash
Your son has choosen a wonderful role model. Unfortunately I've never met the man.

***snip***
It all started with Nash wearing a T-shirt to All-Star activities in Atlanta that said, "No War. Shoot for Peace." Nash continued his protest of the war, as reporters asked him about his shirt and his beliefs, up until and after the first U.S. bombs hit Iraq last week. Those who haven't been receptive to Nash are those that don't think a basketball player should be using his forum to speak out on politics, especially a Canadian basketball player.

"From the start, I spoke out just because I don't want to see the loss of life," Nash told ESPN. "People are mistaking anti-war as being unpatriotic. This has nothing to do with the fact that I'm from Canada. This is a much bigger issue. But now that we're in battle, I hope for as many lives to be spared as possible (and) as little violence as possible before a resolution."

***end of snip***

For what its worth, Nash was born in Johannesburg, South Africa.

4. Us too. We used to like the Mavericks. I had no idea
about the shirt he had on. I knew deep down I liked this guy. Thanks for the link. I will show it to my son in the morning.

5. LOL, I was a Mavs fan
When Nash left I realized the reason I enjoyed watching the Mavericks because of him. There's talk on ESPN.com about Nash as MVP of the year.

ESPN.com

Steve Nash usually laughs when someone asks about his MVP chances.

"I think my mom started that campaign," he'll joke.

If so, Jean Nash must be a persuasive lady.

That's because, at the midpoint of the season, her son is the closest thing to a consensus favorite in the Most Valuable Player race. Except for the Bobcats, every team has played at least 41 games as of Friday, and Nash's role in the rise of the Phoenix Suns would almost certainly make him the trophy winner if ballots were turned in today ... even though history says he has good cause to be so humble.

Actually winning the award this spring would probably rank Nash as the most unlikely MVP of all-time, and not merely because he's a 30-year-old Canadian who has never figured into this debate before. The only recognized point guard to win it in the past 40-odd years is Magic Johnson. It has been almost 30 years since an NBA MVP averaged fewer than 20 points per game (Bill Walton in 1977-78).

6. Thanks for the link. My son has been calling Nash
the most underrated player for years now. It would be really cool if he won the MVP. He seems so low key and not flashy. I don't think you'd ever see his house on Cribs!

Gordon Head, in Victoria, B.C. -- if I go to the end of the street, I can see the high school he attended (Mt. Doug Secondary). He still sponsors a youth basketball league in BC (something like 10000 kids play in it).

8. We were disappointed too. I think that sometimes people
vote for a "name" instead of doing the homework of who actually deserves it more. Yes you said it.....The Suns are a Great team.
When we were in Milwaukee for the game last week, cheering for the Suns, of course, the guy next to us was getting so frustrated it was hilarious. Whenever Nash would make a good play, he would say "Oh God, I hate him....but I love him.....but I hate him." I just said "You just wish he was on your team."

11. We missed the game against the Bulls in Nov. So I
promised him we'd go to this one. Now he is trying to talk me into taking him to Memphis for a Suns game there. Or Seattle or LA. We sat pretty close in Milwaukee also so now ne thinks he needs courtside seats as well. He is begging me!! Giving up future birthday and Christmas presents, etc! I am fearing I created a monster with my great idea!!!! My sister lives near Scottsdale so a game there next year may be a possibility for us though!!

15. It was a great game. Nash made some incredible plays.
We sat 11 rows back. My son did get to high five someone from the Suns though. I think his name is Jackson? Nash was the first one on the court and he missed getting to the spot he was in by about 20 seconds.

24. But, The Weird Part Of That Is. . .
. . .that to an NBA fan, Steve Nash IS a name! He is one of the most famous guards in the league. He's been one of the two superstars on Dallas for 4 years, when Dallas played on national TV more than any other team, save the Lakers.

Now, he's the trigger on one of the best teams in the NBA. Since NBA fans are among the voters, and he's a well-known name among NBA watchers, i find it a shock that he didn't get more votes.

I understand your point, but i think his name would already be big enough to get the "name" votes.

31. I see your point but
I still think Kobe and T-Mac are bigger names. But Nash did get way more popular with all the TV coverage from Dallas. Hopefully he'll remain with the Suns and they will get more TV air time next season.

10. Harder these days to get NBA player autographs. You can try on game night
to come to shootaround, and maybe catch them in a good mood. Different arenas have different security arrangements; I live in LA and have gone to Lakers games, so I can't be much help in how you can meet the visiting teams in Milwaukee.

I waited 15 years to get an autograph of my basketball idol.

If your son is a Steve Nash fan, he should be aware of the other point guards who came before him. Steve Nash has a scar on his forehead from the teeth from my idol from when they matched up in the 2001 playoffs.

So here's a clasic photo of Steve Nash when he was in Dallas, facing off against John Stockton and the Utah Jazz.

14. Great pic. Thanks. We are actually in Illinois, north of Chicago
Edited on Fri Feb-04-05 01:55 AM by borlis
so it's probably the same distance to either place. Last year when the Mavs played the Bulls we went and I asked a security guard if you can catch them getting on the bus after the game outside and he said they actually board the bus inside the building. Asked in Milwaukee also and got the same answer. Times sure are different. In college I had season tickets for the Blackhawks in the 80's and we used to wait around for the players all the time. They would sign autographs take pictures, etc. without any problems. You could actually wait around outside by their cars also back then.

17. I like the Bulls too
Being a Jayhawk I also follow Kirk Hinrich's career (as well as Paul Pierce, Raef LaFrenz, Nick Collison, Drew Gooden, etc.). He's done a lot for the Bulls.

Oh well. Give a cheer to Captain Kirk for me the next time you're at a Bulls game.

34. Yeah, the new arenas and new security took the players away from us
Even as recently as the early '90s you could wait by the players' cars at the old LA Sports Arena. Everything was at street level, no underground parking. You could talk to a player right up until he got in his car and drove home. Good times.

32. I really like Steve Nash
I actually became a Mavs fan when they had Nash, Nowitzki and Eduardo Najera (not a star, but I watched for four years at Oklahoma and became a big fan). Anyway, now that they've broken up that lineup I could care less about the Mavs, and I pull for the Suns when I bother to pay attention at all.

Nash is definitely a fun player to watch. He knows and clearly enjoys the game.
