Everybody once loved animals and was horrified at the thought of death - except for serial killers. Some won't admit it, but everyone has toddler photos or memories of touching the cow muzzle or petting the bunny with awe, smiles and wonder.
A good progressive (or human being) is willing to face how their own lifestyle affects this planet and their fellow humans. The flesh food industry consumes enormous resources in water, grain and irreparable (in this lifetime) habitat destruction and subsequent species extinction. This consumption has forced millions the world over into new levels of desperate poverty because the staple grains which once nourished them are now fed to cattle so that fat Americans can have their cheeseburgers, fast.
You want a real eye opener? Google these words together. ConAgra chili feces - Yum.
Animal misery vis a vie factory farming has led to the most contaminated products meant for human food consumption. One Big Mac, or three pieces of Kentucky Fried Chicken gives you about up to 150 times more dioxins than the EPA feels would be a reasonable level according to Dr. Arnold Shecter, a dioxin expert. The most recent and dramatic example of dioxin poisoning was Viktor Yushchenko.
In 2001 the USDA decided that there should be no consequences for packing plants whose products had near 100% contamination levels of salmonella - - - SALMONELLA Symptoms (after eating): Onset: 6-48 hours; nausea, fever, headache, severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting lasting 2-7 days. Can be fatal. The list of common contaminants in factory farmed animal flesh goes on and on.
Google prion disease, CJD, downer cow, even if you convince yourself that you just couldn't give a damn about the anguish, misery and ugliness of a cow being skinned while she is still alive or a sow crying while she is split - still conscious through her anus down her spinal cord.......... even if you can't admit that you care about that, you should be concerned about the dangers for which this ugly industry is responsible.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), food borne illnesses cause approximately 76 million cases of gastrointestinal illness, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths per year in the United States.
Please visit www.factoryfarming.org The inhumane and vile conditions these poor animals live and die in are now killing us as well. I know not everyone will be willing to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle, even though plant based diets have proved to be much healthier, better for you and your planet. But humane farming and humane slaughter produces healthier animal products and that equals a healthier food supply for those who choose to eat flesh products. It would mean an increase in the price of animal flesh and a decrease in the amount of flesh products consumed, and that is a good thing and finally the point. This species CANNOT continue indefinitely on a path of ever increased flesh consumption, this planet will not support it, Our resources are limited.
What you eat, what you consume, affects this planet and all of it's inhabitants. This is true whether you are the kind of person who cares or not.
