Phone Sex Pervert Targeting Mexican Kids

DELAND -- The 13-year-old Pierson girl froze when she heard a strange man on the phone ask her to describe herself.

Her mother said the call scared her daughter speechless.

"She just kept staring at us," said the 32-year-old mother in Spanish. "My niece grabbed the telephone and answered."

At the other end of the line, an unknown man who identified himself as Dr. Robert Perez, began asking personal questions. When the young woman said she was hanging up, the caller asked her not to until he could finish masturbating, a sheriff's report said.

That was one of many obscene calls children have received since November. The caller has been targeting Mexican children at a DeLand middle school, a Pierson elementary school and Pierson's Taylor Middle-High School, said Betty Seibel, a teacher who also works closely with the Mexican community.

A sheriff's investigator and a school official said all the calls seemed to be made to Mexican children.

"It appears to me they are the ones being targeted," said Pierson Elementary School Principal Leticia Roman. "I have not had any reports from Caucasian or other children in the school."

Roman said two students at her school last year received similar calls and two more have been reported this school year. The caller last year had specific information about at least one of the girls, knowing she was finishing the fifth grade and going to middle school.
