Macintosh Networking question.... Help!

I have no clue what to do, and am not even sure why I have such a bug up my butt today of all days to try to figure this out. We've had an airport base station and a linksys router laying around useless and dormant for over a year.... my husband gave up that long ago.

Everything is old.

We have a G4 running on OS 9.2 and an Ibook also on OS9.2 with an airport card installed.
We have a cable modem connected to the G4, the original style of the airport base station (from 2000) and a four port ethernet cable/dsl router (not wireless)

What do I do????

$50 paypaled into the account of anyone that can successfully walk me (a certifiable dummy) through what I need to get wireless internet access on the laptop!

(Must be prepared to use technical language such as "thingy" and "doodad")

1. What are you trying to do?

Connect the modem to the router and the Macs to the router?

Or connect the cable thingy to the Linksys thingy and the Macs to the Linksys thingy?

I have more thingys than I have whatsits, though... so I am confused.

The coax cable is connected to the modem the modem is connected the g4 with a cord that goes into the hole with the double ended arrows(on the back of the G4).

The only empty whatsit space on the modem is a USB outlet.

What do I do?

5. Connect the cable modem to the 4 port router

You should connect the cable modem to the 4 port router-- do not connect the router directly to the G4. What cable service are you using?

Does the cable coming out of the modem into the G4 look like it will fit into the Linksys? On the Linksys you should see something that says "WAN" or "Uplink".

10. Is the G4 turned on?

- Click on the Apple in the upper left hand screen, find Control Panel then select TCP/IP.

On the top, it should say Connect Via: What does it say there?
Under that, it says Configure: What does it say there?

router address: series of numbers

But there's definitely more Mac experts that me. I work for MPower as a DSL / T1 tech; I usually walk people through the setup but I know someone else can help you more.

The other Mac that's not connected, I'd like you to connect it to the Linksys - you can plug it into any jack that's on there in the front. Turn both on, and I'd like you to do the same thing as before (click on the Apple, select configuration, and TCP/IP) Let me know if there's any numbers on the screen.

Were you able to do that?

Connect Via: gives me these choices:
ethernet built in
airport
apple talk (mac IP)
and an AOL choice that I'm sure I should stay away from! ack!

21. Does the iBook have a plug like the G4?

If so, plug a cable from the Linksys to the iBook, and select Ethernet.

23. Open up Internet explorer on the iBook

It will come up saying something like "page not displayed."

In the address bar (where you type "www.yahoo.com ") type in this number: 192.168.1.1

No WWW in front of it, just type the number in. Let me know what you get.

and got nothing. It tried to connect though the old dial up earthlink number, and now a box that says:

ERROR
the attempt to load 'Accessing URL: http://192.168.1.1/failed

I didn't put in the "http:/ /"

24. Ditch the Linksys Router

You don't need it.

Cable modem -> Airport
Airport -> G4

You'll then need to run the Airport Configuration utility; you'll probably need to search to find it on the G4.

It is my recollection that once you get the Airport configured, your G4 looks like a 10.0.0.1 address or something similar. I believe the Airport configuration utility ends up setting the G4 configuration accordingly.

Once you do that, you should be able to see the Airport broadcast from your laptop's menu bar. The laptop configuration slips my mind at this time (I'm trying to recall from memory, since I'm away from my G4 and my laptop is running OSX and connected to a different wireless network at this time), but I think you'll need to get into the TCP/IP configuration menu and set it up to "Use DCHP" to let the system reconcile the IP addresses. Then click on Netscape or IE and see if you can get a connection established from the laptop.

Let us know if you get this far, and we'll see how to get to your goal from there. Just keep in mind it can be done.

I'm not familiar with the Airport adaptor. I'm trying to get into the Linksys and have Doc put in the IP address info from the G4 into the router.

The ethernet port on the modem goes to the G4, and the only open port left is a USB port.

The airport base station has one ethernet port, and one port that looks like it's for a phone line.

If I connect the cable modem to the base station, do I use a USB cord to connect to the G4 (which doesn't have an airport card)?

28. Don't need an Airport card in the G4

There are 2 Ethernet ports on the Airport base station, from my recollection. One is for external (i.e. cable modem) connections think it's the one on the left side), the other is for a LAN connection (think it may be the middle port).

So connect the cable modem ethernet to the left port on the Airport base station, and connect the middle port on the Airport base station to your G4 ethernet port.

Again, I'm doing this from memory...I'm away from my home configuration. Check your Airport base station documentation to confirm the port connections.

Can you confirm that the phone jack is for a phone connection and not a LAN ethernet connection? The jacks look pretty similar.

33. Connect the Cable Modem and G4 and the Base Station to the Hub/Router

You connect all of those things to the Router with ethernet cables.

Go to the Apple website at this address:

Download the document on that page called "Designing AirPort Networks"

When you have it, open it up in Adobe Acrobat, and go to page 16, chapter 2. There you'll see a picture of how everything hooks up. The cable modem needs to hook up to the "uplink" port on the router. Read the next page or two for details.
