I still don't get why it turns cloudy and white when you add water.

While I do love beer, we're out as of last night. So it's Ouzo night tonight. Just the thought of putting them together . . . :puke:

7. Ouzo really helps the joints - a great drink!

:-)

and turning cloudy white AFTER you add water -

well - that tells you the waiter did not add water before serving the drink.

Much better - IMHO - to the world of the bars where adding water to the gin and vodka, etc. is commonplace.!

13. Ouzo is to Greece what Raki is to Turkey and so on...
have a bit of yoghurt (or tzaziki) and your hangover will be minimal, and if Ouzo does what Raki does it will help with the um, loose bowels the next day as well.

17. its the water, not the sugar
Louche is the term used to describe the clouding effect on absinthe when water is added. Generally used as a mark of quality, but not always reliable, it is certain that absinthes that do not louche have very low herbal content.

When water is added to absinthe, the louche is caused by the essential oils (present when there is a high herbal content) are not able to disperse in the water and go into suspension; i.e. they cannot mix with the water and therefore create a clouding effect. The liquid becomes opaque. Usually a whitish green or yellow.

18. Hey - thanks!
The high herbal content being the wormwood no doubt. Does the sugaar affect the thujones in the wormwood or is it just to make it paletteable?

21. I had a few enjoyable nights with Absinthe. At least I was told they were.
I didn't remember anything afterward. Of course it's because I drank quite a lot of it. It was the good shit, I was in Switzerland at the time. Ahh . . . memories? :toast:
