My nana is dying guys
I just heard about an hour ago. She's stopped eating, etc and only is in her bed at the nursing home. Sigh, she is such a great lady. I know this sounds odd but I want her to find peace, her brothers and sisters are long gone, she's been a widow for a quarter of a century. I love my nana deeply, she is one of the kindest ladies Ive ever known. She's 92 years old and the only great great grandmother I know. Sigh, find peace, dear nana of mine. Prayers, good vibes, would be nice.

27. Go see her, John
My parents are both gone already and my favorite aunt is 91. She is not doing badly but is slowly fading. I live 400 miles from her but I go
and see her as much as I can. I always have the saddest feeling when
I say goodbye that it is the last time. I have made sure to tell each
of my treasured elders that I love them and will always keep them in
my heart. I miss my parents and their generation a bunch. They truly
were the greatest.

Go see her and tell her how much you love her. ((((John))))

131. Just love her,
hold her hand and tell her how much she means to you.

I sat with my mother the night before she passed in the hospital. I held
her hand and hugged her (gently). She was in a morphine haze but she
knew I was there. I broke down and cried around 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning and looked up to see her looking at me, with tears in her eyes.
She knew that I loved her with my whole heart. I like to think it helped
her on the way to the light. She was 'only' 84.

92 is a good old age. You will be sadder for you than for her.
It helps me when I miss my mom so much to remember that I am sadder for
myself than I was for her. She was ready to go because she didn't feel
good and wasn't going to feel good again.

You will see her again, bro.

Much empathy...

Patchuli

31. Has she been checked for DEPRESSION?
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 02:39 PM by Vitruvius
Yes, life as an elderly invalid is not so great, but it absolutely beats the alternative.

In addition, there are any number of physical or medical conditions that can cause apathy, confusion, depression. Those conditions should be ruled out or treated ASAP.

It's a TERRIBLE situation, but it just might yet be possible to solve things and get some more years of life.

Good luck to both of you.

59. The symptoms are indeed very similar -- so similar that a classic way to
differentiate between Alzheimer's and depression is to administer antidepressants and see if there is an improvement.

My Mother died of Alzheimer's -- and this is one of the many things we had done; we have (3) MDs in our immediate family and approached the situation aggressively. The net effect was to salvage another 2-1/2 years; her life during those years was difficult but well worth living.

In the 20 years since, there have been substantial advances in the treatment of Alzheimers' and of conditions that mimic Alzheimers' -- and even more reason to be aggressive.

Again, it is a horrible situation -- and there is no ideal or perfect way to deal with it; one can only do what one thinks best based on the information available and not second-guess oneself afterwards.

Good luck,

Vitruvius

My grandma passed away almost 10 years ago. I had been visiting her every (well almost every) thursday for about 8 years when she died on Thanksgiving Day, another Thursday. I understand how special the relationship can be, and I know that both you and I were fortunate to be able to know our gramdmother for many, many years. It is a gift. Thank you for reminding me about how much I love and miss my own Grandmother. I'm shedding tears for you today.

It isn't so odd that you want her to find peace. She's 92, sounds like she's had a good run. You hang in there though and be a source of strength and consolation to your older relatives, particularly her children. When I was a kid my grandmother's aunt died at the age of 93 and my 69 year old grandmother was very shaken by it. I think that when you spend such a huge amount of time knowing someone you kind of think of them as permanent. All the best to you and your family.

73. Our father, who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

76. Amen and here's another prayer I learned recently

Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

I am sorry to hear about your Grandmother. My Grandmother whom I was very close to died just 2 years ago the same way, she had stopped eating and she closed her eyes and went.

They were worried about her, but she was suddenly doing great, eating well, but not talking, which I found odd, for about a week and a half. Then she just slept for a couple of days and went in her sleep. Peaceful, and best for her, but so sad and lonely for the rest of us. I was just so glad that I spent that time with her. Visit your Nana, if you can. You'll always be glad that you did. :hug:

My other grandmother, my Babci, my mother's mother, died in her sleep. This was long before I lost Nana. And, at her wake, all these older people, friends of hers, kept saying to me that they hoped that they'd go the same way. They almost sounded envious! But now, having been with Nana, I do understand better. She will just move on to a better place and not feel pain or fear. It's those of us who are left behind who feel the pain. I'm here for you and know that you're there for your Nana and your Dad. :hug:

I wish that your Nana, like mine, will get better, but, if she doesn't, I just hope that she leaves this world in her sleep. My other grandmother's friends envied her that, so I guess that this is the best thing that can happen. It's hard for us to understand, but I respect their opinions. Godspeed to your beloved Nana. ;(

147. My grampa is the same age. I know what you mean about finding peace.
His brothers are all going and his wife has been gone for 10 years. He cannot remember anyone at all. So it might as well be that everyone is gone. I wish he would find peace. But God must have some reason for him to be here. I hope he finds the peace of a finished life. Sounds bad to say that, but there are so many great people waiting for him. So, I know what you mean by finding peace.

159. Mine left us at 101 years.
It was a graceful, dignified life and death. Who could ask for more? Nana will always be with you, just like "Ma" is always with me. It's okay to let her go. And it's okay to grieve her passing. Soon you will see your grief replaced with gratitude for all that she's given you. Peace and love, friend.

174. She may surprise all of you, John...
My grandfather had the last rights administered 4 times in 8 years, when they were "sure" he wouldn't last the night, and when they did that, my grandpa would suddenly get stronger and sort of react to the finality of it, in a "Wait Just A Minute, I'm Not Going Anywhere!" reaction. He'd be okay for a couple of years, and then go through it again. He preferred to fight through, and God let him,I guess. So everyone should try to have a positive attitude and their strength will help hers. I've seen it make a difference more than once. My mom went through the last rights three times, and is still here. Prayers for all of you, John.

178. I have lost a lot of dear people over the last few years...
And I find it best to remember all the good things....

Go to the nursing home, spend a little time holding her hand, stroking her hair, talking to her about whatever she wants to talk about. Ask her about the past. Or just sit there, be ther for her. Don't try to tell her to eat, she won't and you will just push her away if you treat her like a child....

Relish these few days you have to spend with your Nana.....

My deepest and most profound thoughts, prayers and best wishes go out to your nana, your family and of course you. I pray that she will find the best of peace, happiness and love and that you and your family will find the same

Be thankful you had approximately eighteen years to get to know her, to spend a lot of time with her and to have some very cherished memories of the time you spent with her.

I will be keeping your nana, your family and you in my thoughts and prayers

198. Sorry to hear the Kleeb
I lost my Nana on 1-8-05. My parents were in Hawaii, so they stuck my poor Nana on ice until 1-16-05. My Nana was 99 years old.

I'll say a prayer. Try not to think negative (longing, attachment, sadness) thoughts about her for 7 days. Every time you feel bummed or sad, STOP THAT THOUGHT and say a prayer in her honor.

It will make you feel better, and, if there is such a thing as reincarnation, it may help your Nana secure a favorable rebirth (hopefully as a liberal).

We all die, so let us live.

ps - not disrespect intended... hope this is helpful...

206. I'm catholic... I believe in heaven too.
but my religion has never really made me feel better, warm and cozy, you know?
I have studied many wisdom traditions. I really like the Dali Lama.

This idea of praying for 7 days and making a conscious effort not to dwell on negative thoughts has really helped me when I have lost someone close to me (or recently, when a 7 year old girl was killed in my town. I felt so sad and hopeless. Then I remembered this idea, and prayed for the 7 days and refused to think about how awful this little girls death was. I actually felt like I was helping her).

Think of your Nana livin it up in Heaven. Pray, and try to limit attachment and longing for at least 7 days (you can always feel those things later, if you must).

I'll send a prayer your way, and for your Nana too. Heck, I'll even give my Nana a shout out! :~)

She got to see her ancestral home of Ireland, became a mother of six, grandmother of god knows how many, and a great grandmother of god knows how many, and a great great grandmoter of one. She is the matriach of our family, if we ever had a Rose Kennedy figure it would be her. A smart and witty Irishwoman.
