My nana is dying guys

I just heard about an hour ago. She's stopped eating, etc and only is in her bed at the nursing home. Sigh, she is such a great lady. I know this sounds odd but I want her to find peace, her brothers and sisters are long gone, she's been a widow for a quarter of a century. I love my nana deeply, she is one of the kindest ladies Ive ever known. She's 92 years old and the only great great grandmother I know. Sigh, find peace, dear nana of mine. Prayers, good vibes, would be nice.

My parents are both gone already and my favorite aunt is 91. She is not doing badly but is slowly fading. I live 400 miles from her but I go
and see her as much as I can. I always have the saddest feeling when
I say goodbye that it is the last time. I have made sure to tell each
of my treasured elders that I love them and will always keep them in
my heart. I miss my parents and their generation a bunch. They truly
were the greatest.

I sat with my mother the night before she passed in the hospital. I held
her hand and hugged her (gently). She was in a morphine haze but she
knew I was there. I broke down and cried around 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning and looked up to see her looking at me, with tears in her eyes.
She knew that I loved her with my whole heart. I like to think it helped
her on the way to the light. She was 'only' 84.

92 is a good old age. You will be sadder for you than for her.
It helps me when I miss my mom so much to remember that I am sadder for
myself than I was for her. She was ready to go because she didn't feel
good and wasn't going to feel good again.

You will see her again, bro.

Yes, life as an elderly invalid is not so great, but it absolutely beats the alternative.

In addition, there are any number of physical or medical conditions that can cause apathy, confusion, depression. Those conditions should be ruled out or treated ASAP.

It's a TERRIBLE situation, but it just might yet be possible to solve things and get some more years of life.

We've always suspected her to have Alheimers though.

59. The symptoms are indeed very similar -- so similar that a classic way to

differentiate between Alzheimer's and depression is to administer antidepressants and see if there is an improvement.

My Mother died of Alzheimer's -- and this is one of the many things we had done; we have (3) MDs in our immediate family and approached the situation aggressively. The net effect was to salvage another 2-1/2 years; her life during those years was difficult but well worth living.

In the 20 years since, there have been substantial advances in the treatment of Alzheimers' and of conditions that mimic Alzheimers' -- and even more reason to be aggressive.

Again, it is a horrible situation -- and there is no ideal or perfect way to deal with it; one can only do what one thinks best based on the information available and not second-guess oneself afterwards.

It isn't so odd that you want her to find peace. She's 92, sounds like she's had a good run. You hang in there though and be a source of strength and consolation to your older relatives, particularly her children. When I was a kid my grandmother's aunt died at the age of 93 and my 69 year old grandmother was very shaken by it. I think that when you spend such a huge amount of time knowing someone you kind of think of them as permanent. All the best to you and your family.

They were worried about her, but she was suddenly doing great, eating well, but not talking, which I found odd, for about a week and a half. My grandfather had the last rights administered 4 times in 8 years, when they were "sure" he wouldn't last the night, and when they did that, my grandpa would suddenly get stronger and sort of react to the finality of it, in a "Wait Just A Minute, I'm Not Going Anywhere!" reaction. He'd be okay for a couple of years, and then go through it again. He preferred to fight through, and God let him,I guess. So everyone should try to have a positive attitude and their strength will help hers. I've seen it make a difference more than once. My mom went through the last rights three times, and is still here. Prayers for all of you, John.

I lost my Nana on 1-8-05. My parents were in Hawaii, so they stuck my poor Nana on ice until 1-16-05. My Nana was 99 years old.

I'll say a prayer. Try not to think negative (longing, attachment, sadness) thoughts about her for 7 days. Every time you feel bummed or sad, STOP THAT THOUGHT and say a prayer in her honor.

It will make you feel better, and, if there is such a thing as reincarnation, it may help your Nana secure a favorable rebirth (hopefully as a liberal).

We all die, so let us live.

I have studied many wisdom traditions. I really like the Dali Lama.

This idea of praying for 7 days and making a conscious effort not to dwell on negative thoughts has really helped me when I have lost someone close to me (or recently, when a 7 year old girl was killed in my town. I felt so sad and hopeless. Then I remembered this idea, and prayed for the 7 days and refused to think about how awful this little girls death was. I actually felt like I was helping her).

Think of your Nana livin it up in Heaven. Pray, and try to limit attachment and longing for at least 7 days (you can always feel those things later, if you must).

I'll send a prayer your way, and for your Nana too. Heck, I'll even give my Nana a shout out! :~)
