Though on Windows I'd go with VideoLAN. The Core Media Player is also pretty good. http://www.corecoded.com

But it's very intrusive...actually it's a pain in the ass. Always sending you e-mails and always wanting you to download some kind of bullshit upgrade.
Go to Download.com and you'll find something for free and something you'll like.
If it's for music, no problem.
If you are looking for something to play all kinds of video... you may want to do some looking around.
What's up with Media Player? There's worse out there.

Whether it's a resources thing or just buggy, between tracks it seizes control of my system, freezes everything for 10-20 seconds, and often skips tracks if I'm typing when this happens.
I haven't uninstalled it, but I probably should.
