Another question for computer gurus
I've got to get a bunch of data off of an old 300 mghz computer (don't want to put it on 3 1/4 floppies). The computer does not have a CD/RW. It has Windows 98 on it.

What's the best/cheapest way to get this data off of the old one? Buy a cheap CD/RW for it?

I dunno.

1. Pack the data into a ZIP drive. Or email it to yourself then sign on with
your new box

5. Where are you moving the data?
You're moving data, not storing it, right?

If it's from one desktop to another, you could simply remove the old hard drive and plug it into the new machine. Similarly, if you have a CD/RW in a different desktop, you could temporarily swap it into the old machine and burn some CDs. Otherwise, if the machine has a USB port (it probably should, it's not so old), something like a USB drive/key would work quickly and with minimum expenditure.

I assume the old machine isn't networked with the new one.

6. does it have usb ports?
Windows 98SE does support usb functions.

If so, get a USB flash drive (you can get a 128 mb one for around $30 on eBay) and migrate the files that way.

8. wow
flash drives have really come down in price. Gotta get one for my 14 yr old, he borrowed mine so he could "bring home" a multimedia file he created at school!

9. You PROBABLY have an open 5.25" drive bay.
Just open the case, yank the drive, make sure it's jumpered as slave and not master, put it in an open bay, connect it to the power supply and IDE cable, and you're set...should show up automatically in Windows Explorer, and you can just move the files to your primary hard drive.
