Is there a story behind your screen name?
Mine is for Eric Clapton, the album EC was here. Kinda became my nickname after the album came out, people started calling me that, besides being my initials Elaine Cecelia - I'm also easy going....thus...EC. (plus I was working with another Elaine at the time and she refused to be called the older Elaine or Big Elaine or Elaine the first, so I said just call me EC and it stuck) so it's my nickname at work and among friends....

2. mine refers to the lowest threat level on the terror alert chart.
as a comment on how ridiculous it is that that level even exists there (and further how ridiculous the chart is in the first place).

but for some reason i don't think that ever comes across; maybe i should have worded it different.

What character in you make-up is this to convey to us? That you are wry? or think things through? What made you pick this name above anything else?

it would take too long to explain the premise, but essentially Arkana is a magician who was horribly mutilated by a trick that went wrong. It's my AIM screen name too, so I figured I'd make it my DU name.

I was named after Martin Eden
Martin Eden was the title character of a novel about a self-taught working class writer -- modeled after the novel's author, Jack London.

I thought it was appropriate for my screen name.

Because most Dems are the self-taught working class or because you personalized closely with it?

156. Because
Since I was actually named after the title character, it is obviously "personalized."

The character received less formal education than I but he was honest, inquisitive, and passionate -- characteristics I admire even if I don't quite measure up.

My parents were lefties in the 50's when they gave me the name.

And when you're actually named after something, it seems appropriate to use it as a pseudonym.

There may be a deeper subconscious reson why I chose Martin Eden, but rest assured I'm giving you everything my conscious mind has on this subject at the moment.

4. I was working in the yard the day I decided to join DU
I came in from gardening, feeling good about things, and decided to formally join DU instead of just lurking. The name "yardwork" to me means doing the hard work required to document what the right-wingers are doing.

I like the word's populist, plebeian connotations, too.

It's really another mother's fault, mother nature since I had to endure the "birth trauma" (The Trauma of Birth, Otto Rank); also father Otto's as well since he started the process. EC, you and I are in hot contention for the semi-annual DU Pedantic Prize.

I was originally "Dirty Sanchez"... someone complained (I know who).

I changed it to "D__S". No one complained, but it was blah.

Changed it to "Name removed" during the "amnesty" period (had it for a few days, anyhow)... admins didn't like it.

So, now I'm back to being plain ol "blah" D__S.

85. Zimmer played Smart's cousin from Arkansas who was being abused
by her husband. They talked about their childhood and how, in first grade, they challenged their teacher saying..."We run and we run and we don't fall down! Cause we're the rowdy girls!" Well, Michael and I adopted that slogan for ourselves, only changing the gender. "We run and we run and we don't fall down! 'Cause we're the Rowdyboys!"

I've watched Zimmer on the Guiding Light for 20 years so I was really drawn to her appearance on Designing Women, which is probably my favorite series of the last 20 years. Those women weren't the typical southern stereotypes-they were real.

118. Michael and I drop Julia Sugerbaker lines to each other all the time....
Her tell-off speeches were absolutely brilliant. Her rant about fudgesickles is my favorite, but southern women eating clay is a close second. Bernice and Anthony got a lot of wonderful lines too. I can still hear Bernice "Black man! Black man!" and Anthony, dressed as a woman on an all female camp-out, when asked who let him on the bus, said "Some white girl..."

I know Lucille Ball must have smiled in heaven to see Annie Potts and Jean Smart frantically digging through the ingredients of a salad bar, looking for a pearl necklace that turned out to be fake.

It was a really classy show.

127. Huh, okay, looked at your profile,
see you like art. My degrees are in Fine Art and Interior Design...just don't like the commercial side of it...still sell pastels of nudes once in a while when I decide to put some in a gallery around here, just will not do anymore shows or fairs, can't stand them...would rather have the regular job and come home and enjoy my art...although I think I am motivated enough to do a political poster or card for Syacruse Cultural Arts.

Not going to combine art and writing?

Wanted to use one of my drawings for avatar, someday I'll get on it...

My brothers and mother would stay there all summer while dad would come up when he could. We had a cottage on the lake, swimming, skiing, fishing, hiking. Just a great place. Just a few miles away was the Bemis stream, would go fly fishing there for hours on end, just for the hell of it.

Was able to take my son there for a number of summers before my folks sold it. They then retired to Maine.

40. Mine has a double meaning. One is for............
John Paul Jones ( his actual name was John Paul) who fought the British during the revolution. Probably his most famous ship was the Bonhomme Richard which sank after defeating the British ship Serapis off the coast of England. It was in this engagement that he stated the famous line "Sir, I have not yet begun to fight." I always admired the way he insisted on taking the war directly to England and causing the terror there that the English were inflicting here. the other meaningis that he named the ship in honor of Benjamin Franklin (Poor Richard) who I also admired for his consistant regard for the common man and his disdain for the noble elite. Not to mention he was also a genius.

He left a wife and four young daughters, my mother was the oldest at 12 yrs. My Grandmother was destitute, but eventually managed to buy a 2 flat house, and raise her kids. She couldn't find her husbands grave for years. Eventually my Mom married my Dad, and my paternal Grandmother found out that not only did my Mom's dad not have a gravestone, but no one could find his grave. She instituted a search and he was found buried under the name of Hickman. In honor of the man I never knew, but my mother mourned all of her life, I chose hickman1937.

71. Ya, I wish I'd known him.
My whole life, growing up in the 50's and 60's, he was rarely mentioned. The little I was told was of a man who loved his girls so much that he couldn't stand to discipline them, so he had a way of being so disapointed when they did wrong, that they rarely misbehaved. This was confirmed recently by one of my aunts.

157. I'm a jack of all trades.
maybe not even that! Maybe a five of clubs oa ll trades! But at any rate, I play accoustic fingerstyle folk--a la a brutally primitve Leo Kottke. I must say my playing wsa helped immensely when I started experimenting with alternate tunings primarily DADGAD. No singer/songwriter stuff here--no vocals. As for electric, I go for busy-crunchy-stuff, a la Joe Satriani or Steve Vai.

Please note--I'm not saying I am anywhere in these guys leagues--I am FAR, FAR, FAR, from that--it's just to give everybody some idea of what my playing is like.

As for paddling--just about anything, anywhere! Lake Canoeing, sea kayaking, whitewater kayaking--count me in! :) Well, I tried whitewater canoeing once--that was a little too hard. As they say on the river, canoeing, one half the paddle, twice the paddler. My favorite is whitewater kayak stuff-again I can hold my own, but I'm not red-hot. I can surf okay, hole-ride and on tame stuff flat-spin, but the really crazy stunt moves are FAR beyond me!

You sure have allot of lakes in Minn. to paddle in. I used to kayak in Lake Michigan, rolled over a few times. I enjoy sailing best, I think.

167. Sailing is
something I'd love to get into. I've liked it the few times I've tried it. But most sailboats are a little tough to strap to the roof of a cavalier!

Yeah, rolling can be tough. My whitewater roll is more "accidental" than "relaible." I've come up a few times--but sadly it wasn't the last few I tried. I keep lifting my head too soon. I've never dumped my sea kayak.

And the story about Joe (as I heard him say in an interview) was that the first rock n roll he heard was Hendrix--he just figured that was how you played guitar!) :hi:

I have a keen fondness for the goddess Athena and Greek Mythology, in general. Also, in the myths, nothing was more powerful than the Aegis, not even the thunderbolts of Zeus! Therefore, I see myself engaged in discussion, and if needed, I will raise the "Aegis" to fend off stupidity and hate! The Aegis also had the property of reflecting one's own deceit, so I feel more people need an Aegis and aim it at Washington! :)

Originally, it did belong to Zeus, but he gave it to his favorite child, Athena, who was to take his throne upon his death or exile. In earlier myths, Zeus almost always had the shield. In latter myths, it was almost exclusively Athena that carried it or lent it to heroes! :)

I dreamt of myself posting on a board with the username "SmileyBoy".

I felt it to be a prophecy, so I changed from "northwest" to that.

140. Yes there is. Here it is:
My time coming, any day, don't worry bout me, no
Been so long I felt this way, ain't in no hurry, no
Rainbows end down that highway where ocean breezes blow
My time coming, voices saying, they tell me where to go

Don't worry bout me, no no, don't worry bout me, no
And I'm in no hurry, no no no, I know where to go.

California, preaching on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine

My time coming, anyday, don't worry bout me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow
Still I know I lead the way, they tell me where I go

Don't worry bout me, no no, don't worry bout me, no
And I'm in no hurry, no no no, I know where to go

California, a prophet on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine

You've all been asleep,
You would not believe me
Them voices telling me,
You will soon receive me
We're standing on the beach,
The sea will part before me
(Fire wheel burning in the air)
And you will follow me,
And we will ride to glory
(Way up the middle of the air)

And I'll call down thunder
And speak the same
And my word fills the sky with flame
And might and glory gonna be my name
And men gonna light my way

My time coming, anyday, don't worry bout me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin slow
My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no

Don't worry about me...

141. It's a communications operating signal.
It means (relating to aviation): "I am approaching my point of no
return."

For them it means "If I fly any further, I won't have enough
fuel to return home." I like OPSIGs, since they're concise, and they
mean exactly the same thing, no matter what your language is.

For me, it's more a reflection of my emotional/mental state, plus the
fact that it's a relatively unique nick on IRC, information services and
the BBSs I've been visiting since 1981.

m_welby is actually marcus welby (an old tv show for those too young to remember), although the name has nothing to do with the show. My first name is mark, so as a child I had multiple nicknames, one being marcus welby (and marcus aurelius and spot). Also I am a Information systems professional and some co workers nicknamed me 'the doctor' because they thought I knew everything.

no really that exciting I admit.

I'm from New Jersey, and I'm a proud Democrat. The 106 doesn't have any significance. I just took it from my AOL screen name, which is my firstname initial and my last name followed by 106 (and except for immediate family and friends of my immediate family, I don't even go by my first name, so I don't even know why I chose P instead J :) )

Electronic Princess. That's my husband's favorite nickname for me. Instead of buying me jewelry or figurines for the house, he know I prefer "electronic gadgets" for presents. The entire house is filled with these gadgets as well as a couple of antennas. The huge discone antenna is mounted from a rafter from our vaulted ceiling and provides excellent reception of stations on my base station scanner.

Yes, I'm a proud Electronic Gadget's gal ... love to tinker.
