Senator wants boxing gloves on chickens
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A state senator has a plan for saving Oklahoma's gamefowl industry now that cockfighters are legally prohibited from pitting birds fitted with razor-like spurs.

State Sen. Frank Shurden, a longtime defender of cockfighting, is suggesting that roosters be given little boxing gloves so they can fight without bloodshed. The proposal is in a bill the Democrat has introduced for the legislative session that begins Feb. 7.

"Who's going to object to chickens fighting like humans do? Everybody wins," Sen. Frank Shurden said.

6. Oh, good lord...
You know, now that cloning and genetic manipulation are becoming everyday things, we really need some crazy scientist to just go totally into bad 1950s sci-fi la-la land and create an 8 foot, 700 pound rooster and outfit him with boxing gloves then put this senator from my state in the ring with him.

11. Cockfighting is a sick bloodsport that is still legal in three states ...
Cockfighting is a bloodsport in which two roosters are placed in a pit to fight, usually to the death. Their natural spurs are sawed off and replaced by razor sharp steel blades from one to three inches long or by curved implements called gaffs measuring up to three inches in length. The birds are also given various legal and illegal drugs such as strychnine, caffeine, amphetamines, and epinephrine to make them more aggressive and harder to kill. This activity is held before an arena of cheering spectators who often wager large sums of money on the outcome of the contest.

13. Only think I can think of is this rule:
8. Do not post frivolous or off-topic news stories. The moderators of the Latest Breaking News forum have the authority to act as news editors, and may remove news stories that they do not consider appropriate for this forum.

I'm not saying I agree, just that it's the only rule that fits.

14. It is kinda funny...but i still think it's LBN
The senators quotes make it amuzing but the fact remains that this is a serious issue. Living in Louisiana, I am outraged that cockfighting is still legal in this state. This senator who is a cockfighting supporter is just trying to find a loophole to keep it legal.

First of all I don't believe that the gloves would really be used that often. It's a blood sport, and that's what everyone is there to see.

19. Is whether this thread is placed here or LBN all that important ?
After all, the Mods work hard and it's not nice to get their gander up.

But far be it for me to try and ruffle any feathers here.

just an observation. I read the rules and thought it would be okay. I understand why they moved it here. No worries :)

16. Nope, and putting widdle gloves on roosters would NOT work ...
Just like illegal "dog fights" the people who gather to see Cockfighting want to see the gore, blood, suffering and imminent death. It makes these sociopaths feel more powerful and alive.

Nope, folks like this (mostly underground fringe elements of society and curious voyeurs) would NOT use these gloves OR they'd figure out a way to strap even more deadly razor sharp blades on DA roosters' mitts.

Nope, if there's any form of justice it will be deemed illegal.

21. This was both funny as hell...
...and sicko freaky, too. I'm definitely against any event that pits two animals against each other in a fight to the death. Same with dog fighting.

I also don't much care for bullfighting, which is basically animal torture wrapped in a festive mood.

As far as Republican OK State Sen. Frank Shurden, I am confident he is doing it for the national name publicity, as the man surely knows the news stories will end any slight chance he may have had to actually implement such a law.
