I'm giving up alcohol as of today.
Those who know me know that that's saying something. I like to drink. I'm tired of it, though. I started drinking in college and haven't really stopped since.

If anyone wants to flag down Zomby for me and have him keep the coffee coming, I'd appreciate it. :)

2. Good for you!
It's tough - I am off the sauce 4 years in February - but it's so much better.

It's good that you are putting it out there and asking for support - it is almost impossible to do it alone! I commend you on your courage! Good luck! :)

4. Excellent! Your liver and your wallet will thank you! Drink lotsof water,
and get that system flushed out.

There isn't a THING wrong with social glasses of wine, the occasional whiskey out with the boys, and a beer or two on the weekend. But drinking on a daily basis can indeed become a problem.

You sound like a smart, self-aware person with great judgement; right on!

13. when i quit, the first thing i noticed was that i had all this money in my
pockets..Bills actually!! had to start keeping them in my wallet.. what a concept!!

when i quit turning left my second step into the grocery store i knew i was on the road to recovery.. they kept the beer right around the corner so you could pick it up first.. and budget your shopping around the alcohol.. devious and insidious

9. Good luck!
I have quit drinking myself in '99 .. it's really nowhere to drink.. I took up cannabis to help w/ staying off beer, and that helped, and wasn't as toxic.

11. one day at a time, i had a black out that lasted 32 years.. keep at it

if it doesn't work, check out A.A.

they have different meetings.. you dont have to go to skid row for a meeting..

I quit drinking by learning to meditate. once you learn to just 'be' with the cravings.. they become nothing more than the other thoughts that come and go in the mind like waves on the beach. you will learn to not associate thoughts with emotions that reinforce the addiction.

they have some pretty good little video meditation instruction at www.buddhanet.net and some audio lectures in the Buddhanet Audio section..

meditation instructions are more easily found in Buddhist sites.. meditation isn't exclusively a "Buddhist" thing. it is much older than Buddhism which is 2,500 years old.. meditation is a 'method' for training the mind. i would say that most if not all professional sports people do it.. it gives them the competitive edge.. of being in control and observing what is going on without distraction

quiting is really serious.. that shit will kill you. if it doesn't it will make you and everyone around you miserable.. it is a progressive disease. 1 in 8 are hopelessly addicted upon their first drink.

if you quit you must never drink again.. or it starts all over..i have lost everything to alcohol, my wife, my child, my career and my health. i suffered for 32 years trying to quit, i gave up trying to quit till i met a Tibetan Monk , he taught me to meditate.
there is a good book by Rob Narin, 'Diamond Mind'... best i have found

its an adventure.... alcohol is a slow death, a waste of a precious human life.

16. And on the day...
we find out beer fights cancer. Tough luck.

But, that was non-alcoholic beer they studied anyway, and you're a lot better off now.
