1. Medicine is such a lame-o word
medication sounds much more official, much more important.

Medicinal is even better, though it is an adjective, not a noun.

Rock on, man!

3. Medicine and medication have always been synonymous when
referring to "a medicine."

Medicine also means the discipline of medicine, and medication also means the process of treatment or the administering of a medicine.

It really is okay to use "medication" in place of "medicine" as a noun, but personally, I prefer medication as a verb.

When I medicate my son, I tell him I am giving him "medicine."

7. I thought that medicine was taken to relieve an ailment
and medication was ongoing treatment.

Did I just make that up out of thin air?

10. American: "In the" hospital. Brit: "In hospital."
Don't ask me why.
They're also "in" university while we go "to" the same place.

13. Medicine cures illness.
Medication keeps the symptoms down without treating the illness itself, thereby allowing your pharmaceutical company to squeeze much more money out of you. And in the end, isn't that what's really important?
