Is Chocolate Soy Milk bad for my cat?
Mind you - I just didn't give Abbott a bowl of the stuff. But I was on my computer and enjoying a glass of it when I knocked the stuff all over the place.

Please say this stuff can't hurt my cat. He was there drinking away but I doubt he had much

2. certainly no worse than chocolate cow milk
9/10 cats are lactose intolerant.

Let the kitty drink, chances are its cat food is fortified with a little soy anyway.

3. If you love your cat...
... you won't do that. Chocolate is toxic in dogs and cats. You might get away with it in a very small amount, but it's not worth exposing it to harm.

7. I know a cat that lived to be 19
had cafe au lait and a piece of that rice cripsie chocolate bar every morning for breakfast. But it is wise to be careful. He also loved olives with piemento.

4. the rule of thumb is one ounce per pound of body weight
http://www.pets.ca/pettips/tips-20.htm

so a 10-pound cat can have 10 ounces of milk chocolate (i assume the soy part is irrelevant. so it sounds like abbott is probably fine.

but look for symptoms: diarrhea, excess urination, nausea, seizures, irregular heartbeat and coma. (isn't it so helpful when they tell you to watch for "coma" as a symptom?)

9. Oh - I thought it was less than that...
My ma's dog ate some semi-sweet chocolate chips, and we called the emergency vet, and they said it was 1 oz. per 10 pounds of body weight. Hmmmm......

10. big difference between chocolate CHIPS and chocolate MILK
Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 12:30 AM by unblock
there's a lot more chocolate per ounce in chocolate chips than in chocolate milk.

see the link i posted above (#4).
seems about 2 oz. per pound is the limit for semi-sweet chocolate.

5. Chocolate is very bad for cats

and dogs.

Nearly killed my dog once (he ate some chocolate bars when he was being bad). Granted, that is much more than soy milk, but still . . .

Plus, I had a vet tell me that cats' systems are so much more delicate than dogs' systems, as far as medicines and toxins go.

8. FYI; Chocolate is also toxic to birds.
Apparently it's not good for any of our animals. I guess that means we have to be sure we eat it all ourselves. :-)

12. Hi notmyprez,
I was just going to post that. It's important for folks to know chocolate is bad for birds also.

I love your little Grace. I'm a big bird fan. I have a dove, two cockatiels (one I raised from a 2 week old chick)and a red rump parrot.
I've had many ,many budgies but thier life span is so short I could't take the heartbreak of losing another so haven't had one since my last one passed on 3 years ago. They are so sweet and wonderful but despite the best of care they are so prone to tumors. I miss them so much!

13. Hi montana_hazeleyes! Nice to meet another bird person.

Thanks for the compliment to Grace. Aren't birds great! Sounds like you've got quite a flock. I've also got a senegal parrot and a budgie, both of whom live with my ex, but I can visit them anytime.

I know what you mean about budgies. I think they're great birds as well, also highly underappreciated. Once a vet made a comment about them being "tumor factories." Had a beautiful white budgie who was the sweetest bird I've ever met: she pretty much trained herself (!) and she had a vocabulary of about 100 words.

15. Hi again notmyprez.
Your Grace looks so pretty and so sweet.
I'm not sure what kind she is though.

Yes you are so right, birds are so wonderful, sweet, loyal and so intelligent. And budgies are the smartest of all the parrots and if taught are capable of the largest vocabularies. Maybe because they are so small and plentiful they are under appreciated.

Most of my birds are ones I rescued from neglectful homes. My little red rump parrot was brought to me by a friend who found him outside exhausted and hungry.
I never found who he belonged to and I'm glad I didn't. I could tell he had not been well treated and I wouldn't have given him back anyway. He was so wild and fearful. Now almost two years later he is so tame and happy. I didn't know what he was until I took him to the vet for a check -up. He is so beautiful. Every color of the rainbow and iridescent.
I don't cage my birds. I'm fortunate to have 2 rooms that they occupy in the back so they are safe.

Oh my, I'm going on and on. I guess I could write a book about birds,I love them so much!lol

16. Grace is a parrotlet, a pacific parrotlet to be more precise.
She is the smallest parrot, about 4 inches tall. The fact that these birds are tiny makes them all the cuter, IMHO, and their personalities are just as cute as their appearance. These little birds are full of personality, and Grace is no exception. And parrotlets, pacific females in particular, are feisty and somewhat fearless; they're related to the Amazon parrot, and they seem to think they're just as big. LOL :-)

14. When I was a kid the old guy next door
fed his dog several Hershey Bars every day and the dog lived 15 years or so. The dog's name was Cocoa and needless to say he lost most of his teeth at an early age.
