In that picture of me, I was trying to teach my uncle how to shoot with my camera. He took like seven shots before he got one right. It was a little frustrating.
Also, it kind of sucked, cause we went up the mountain and the day got real cloudy, messing up a normally amazing view of the city.
But let's face it, attending a Miami Hurricanes game always gets me excited.

Wake up. It’s time to go to work. Sit at the desk doing the routine tasks. Push this key. Print that paper. Don’t forget to stop at the store on your way home. There’s always something that has to be bought. That’s why you have to get up and go to work every morning. Not because it is fulfilling, not because it brings you joy, but because you need the money to buy the things society says you really ought to have. So few of us are truly happy. The funny thing is that most of us don’t even realize how isolated and desperate we have become. We are shells of what we could be. We wander through our daily routine. Funny how yesterday was very similar to today isn’t it? We watch television, distract ourselves from our monotony. The days blend together. How old am I? 31. When did that happen? We are prisoners. Just as much prisoners as the folks locked behind iron bars and razor fences. We are just the well-behaved prisoners. Like a dog you can let run outside because you know it will come back when you call to it. Also like the dog, we sometimes feel that tug to run free, but it is just so distant for us. Society whispers in our ears…come back, come back. Don’t wander off, it’s dangerous away from us. Stay. Stay between the lines. Listen to us, it’s for your own good. Buy this, wear that, eat this, feel that, or better yet, don’t feel at all. Go to school so you can be programmed to think the right way. Programmed to settle for mediocrity. Programmed to settle for good enough.

If you don’t follow the rules of society and mother culture, then you are a dissident. One who will need to be sternly dealt with. There can be no true change as long as we are so heavily outnumbered. Change would require a shift of power, and those with power are immensely loathe to part with it. They will cheat. They will lie. They will steal. They will kill. They will pull the wool over your eyes, and believe me, they have. They have distracted you so completely that you ignore the problems of the world that are all around you. Mother culture promises that everything will be fine. We can fix it. Well, don’t buy it; not even for a second. Prejudice, war, species extinction, famine, disease, pollution. The outright rape of the planet to exploit it for its resources. Resources needed to keep us distracted with televisions, cars, and computers like the one I type this on. Culture whispers, “Make sure you get the latest and greatest”.

What is it about me that allows me to see this while others are blinded. What am I lacking that keeps me from truly doing anything about it? Am I an anarchist? Am I a communist or socialist? Perhaps, I’m not even sure I know. Am I wrong? Am I afraid? The leaders of this country would probably view me as a left wing terrorist.

I am a spiritualist. I am a dreamer. I am a wounded lover; a lover of nature, life, dance and song. I exist in my own paradox, and to be sure, doubt not for a second that I am afraid. Afraid for myself, afraid for children I hope to someday father and teach. I am afraid for those that do not see. But I also have hope, because I hear another voice besides mother culture. It is my soul and spirit, my primordial instinct if you will. It promises that other paths are there. Paths that do not promise perfection per say, but do promise balance and harmony; both spiritual and physical. I just need to find the way. So I continue to try. I continue to hope.

The reference to "mother culture" makes me think so. That book (and series) turned my worldview upside-down, and I hear you 100%. The thing is, even if you wanted to "escape", you can't. Nobody realizes that the world is a sacred place, and we BELONG in it.

Ishmael and a few of Daniel Quinn's other books. Ishmael messed with my worldview significantly. I also thoroughly enjoyed "The Story of B".

I have read Jensen's "A Language Older Than Words" and would say it is probably one of my favorite books. Truly great stuff.

I always have a hard time trying to figure out why it is so difficult to make people see some things that seem so obvious to me.

After reading those books, it was like hearing something I already instinctively knew, but could never quite express or conceptualize coherently.

Check out Jensen's "The Culture of Make Believe". Though somewhat thematically similar, it's more thorough and extensive indictment of western civilization (and I do mean extensive - over 600 pages, but well worth it). That man has the ability to bring me to tears when he writes. Fantastic book.
