Grand canyon mule rides

Anybody out there ever taken one of the mule rides into the Grand Canyon? Could you share your experience with me. And one other question, there is supposed to be a 200lb. weight limit. Are they pretty strict with that or do they make some exceptions. By the time I could get out there, I might be able to get to about 215, but that would be about it.

1. Limitations...

I haven't taken the mule ride, but I did look into it once upon a time. Here's the deal (from the website):

Mule Rides are available on a very limited basis. If you do not make reservations at least 6 to 8 months in Advance, it is less likely that you will be able to secure a trip on the Mule Ride.

Rider Qualifications
EACH RIDER MUST NOT WEIGH MORE THAN 200 LBS. (91 kilograms) FULLY DRESSED. Yes, we do weigh everyone. Each rider must be at least 4 feet, 7 inches (55 total inches or 1.38 meters) in height, regardless of previous riding experience. Each rider must be able to speak and understand fluent English. Each rider must be in good physical condition. Riders should not be afraid of heights or large animals. Rider cannot be pregnant.

Safety
The mules are carefully selected for strength, endurance, and temperament. They are thoroughly trained by the guides so that they are well adapted to the unique environment and work situation of the Grand Canyon. Although we have 80 years of experience in working with mules, they are animals and not always predictable. The restrictions we place on the rides are intended for safety and to avoid distracting or disturbing the mules. There is always an element of risk due to trail conditions, other trail users, and sudden appearances of wildlife native to the Grand Canyon. While serious accidents or injury seldom occur, risk is minimized by carefully following the Trail Guide's instructions.

10. I'm TERRIFIED of heights and have been on a horse only

once or twice in my life. I don't think I'd do well on the mule rides.

I've been to the Grand Canyon once with my mom and her husband, Bill. It was fun! I didn't hike it or anything as I was with my mom and she is not of hiking caliber.

2. Welcome to DU! Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon?

I've been a few times--the first time you see it it will literally take your breath away. Absolutely stunning--you can't imagine how incredible it is.

If I were you, I'd try to get down a little more in weight and hike down, like I did once. Never wanted to ride the mule--it just looks uncomfortable, and the the path down is narrow, and steep drops at places. I'd rather manuever that under my own control!

5. The mules are safe

They avoid edges, preferring the walls, and that is one reason there has never been a fatality with the mules in the decades of them working the Canyon.

However, there have been PLENTY of hiking fatalities.

If I weren't over the 200 pound limit, I would do the mule ride myself.

Then you're just as safe, or more. I have no doubt that you are!

4. I have a few facts

First, IF they grant exceptions, it is ONLY for someone who can prove they have EXTENSIVE experience with mules. It's based on the technique for riding them when over the limit.

Second, there have NEVER been any fatalities with the mules in the Canyon.

Third, if you go, take the train to the Canyon. It's the best way to travel to get there!

6. The best way to see the Canyon

is from the bottom. Rafting it. It's a two week trip but it's wort it.

I've also hiked down the Bright Angel Trail.

skip the mules.

9. I'd love that

Bright Angel is a good way to get a full day done.

Since I can't ride the mules, I would do that anyway. The rafting is a good goal too.

The train is my recommendation for getting there TO the Canyon, although if bringing lots of equipment, a car or truck would be better.

11. Bright Angel is the one that goes directly to Phantom Ranch?

It's been a few years since I hiked the Canyon and I can't remember - would you refresh my memory please?
