Poll question: You Avoid The Draft By Volunteering For......
Assuming you're the right age... which of these would you volunteer for? Any particular reason why?

(And NO... "they-have-the-best-looking-uniforms" is not a valid reason.)

-- Allen

P.S. Although... I've always liked U.S. Navy uniforms.

1. Air Force Reserve. I used to work for the AFR as a civilian trainee.

Really nice people there, and a much less chance of a potential air combat death than ground combat.

On edit: It would be a moot point anyway, because I'd be off to Toronto if there was a draft.

26. Obscure terminology, there, guys....
When I leave the office in the evening, I will sometimes remark to my secretary, "I'm off.." and she will often come back with "You certainly are!" I'm guessing "out" is shorthand for 'outta the closet' (in which case, good for you!) but I must admit, it gave me a coupla minutes pause....

Hmmm, back to the topic. As an late middle-aged guy, and a Quaker besides, I'm not sure quite how to address this matter. During WWII a bunch of Quaker CO's were taken up to Minneapolis, where they volunteered to be part of studies on starvation under Ancel Keyes at U. Minn. They weren't starved to death or even close, mind you, but still.....
But my son is of that age. And doesn't have the Quaker convictions I do - not that common at draftable age, I guess; neither did I. I suppose I'd join the group that does rescue sorts of work......

5. Navy for me
Two reasons I guess:

1. You will never hear the headline:

The Navy's third fleet got bogged down today in Baghdad as snipers picked off their petty officers

2. As a military service I've kinda always liked the Navy.

33. Peace Corps doesn't keep you out of the draft...
I was in Peace Corps during the early 70's, and it was made clear, this was not alternative service. Nor do you get any vet benefits, recognition as having 'served your country', parades, what-have-you. We were in places where the guys with guns were getting hazardous duty pay! I was in Korea - and we got our allowance for expenses and $2k resettling allowance at the end of our Peace Corps term. It's real volunteer work, and proud of it.

14. WARNING about the Coast Gaurd!
Coast Gaurdsmen are, right now, doing 'security duty' for Navy ships in the Middle East ports.
And if the Navy takes casualties in this 'war', it will be in port...with the Coast Gaurd right there, in a small boat, trying to prevent it.

12. Definitely the Marines
They're goal-oriented and the Marines I have met have been honorable people.

The only war I ever would have volunteered for would have been WWII.

17. A friend of my mother's, class of 1939....
knew what the future held for his generation. He figured he didn't want to be drafted into the Army. Since he was a talented horn player he joined the Navy & got a cushy gig. Member of the ship's band--on the Battleship Arizona.

He's still there.

18. I'd wait for my draft number to come up.
Sure I could find myself in harms way, but all the volunteers could be, too.

Dichromatic colorblindness is now a disqualifier from combat arms, so that keeps me out of the riskier positions. There's risk in being a cook in the Army, sure, but not as much risk as taking a hill.

25. Actually, I signed up for the draft
In 1979, after I turned eighteen, I signed up like any good law-abiding citizen would. Of course, Jimmy Carter ended the draft completely shortly after that, so it didn't much matter. But I did sign up.

28. Coast guard, 'cause they don't kill people
...at least i don't think so. I don't believe they have the same combat training as the other armed services. Plus I don't have an moral problem with "fighting" (when absolutely necessary) to defend my country. I do have a problem going overseas to fight elsewhere to defend business interests.

29. navy...heres why....
army/marines/air force(to a lesser degree)=you get a tour of the dessert, mre's, sleeping in a foxhole, no baths, snipers...the list goes on and on....

navy=20 or more miles off-shore, no snipers, ships have air conditioners, 4 hot meals served daily by decent and sometimes brillian cooks, a nice comfy bed at the end of your watch...

where do you want to be when the sh@t hits the fan....gimme a good 688i class sub any day over a marine base....

take a virtual tour of a 688i class sub here....

30. Submariners get the best food!
because they are underwater for six months at a time, and they think they deserve it. Then the navy, and the rest kinda go down hill equally from there.
