Edited on Mon Jan-03-05 11:54 PM by mvd
I don't rule out modern pop music, and I'm proud of that fact. I have a feeling that more here like pop, but are afraid to post it like I do. There's no reason to be afraid. There's no best or worst music.

Also, I have a three letter username. :-)

oh and also: I like country, even much non-jingoistic new country.

and while DU is a great place to discuss progressive issues in general, it is often hopelessly clueless on issues of race and multiculturalism. That is because there are relatively few people of color who participate in DU:

73. They don't ask your race .. but there is a random sample
If you look at my post, I cross referenced a thread in the African American issues group that tried to estimate the racial composition of DU:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=258&topic_id=129&mesg_id=129

The method I used was to take the gallery as a random sample. Obviously, the group of people who posted their pictures to the gallery is a very small group compared to the total membership of DU. But if it is a random sample -- and there is no reason to believe it is not -- it should very accurately predict the overall racial composition of DU. This is the same methodology that is used in polling: a small but random sample can accurately predict the makeup of the whole.

On that basis, it is possible to predict that DU is about 1.4% African American, which makes it not at all similar in racial composition to the Democratic Party or the country as a whole. Put another way, black people make up a greater percentage of the republican party than they do of DU. The percentages are similiar for Asians and Latinos.

Also, if you check some of the threads in the African American group you will find the recurring lament that while DU is good on progressive issues, there is a lot of racial cluelessness and even latent racism.

Does that mean that being white linked to being "more computer savvy"?

My hypothesis is that nonwhites might hesitate to post their photos because they might enjoy the novelty of participating in conversations with whites as individual personalities, rather than as "the black guy", or otherwise as presumed representatives of a group.

to people like my own self, who AREN'T as computer savvy as those who have put their pictures up. I don't have the knowledge to do it, and don't choose to do it even if I knew what I was doing. I'm not embarrassed that I don't know how, and if it mattered to me, then I would figure it out. It has nothing to do with anyone's capacity to learn how to do it. Personally, I like my own anonymity. You have no idea what I look like, what race I am, or am married or related to. YOUR presumptions are uncalled for. I fit nicely into numerous "minority" categories, but I don't need to elaborate. If someone chooses to post their picture here, fine. There are only close to about 59,700something people(based on the approximate figure of 60,000 members of DU that I've seen quoted) who haven't felt the need or indeed didn't necessarily want to take the time to figure out how to post them. The only group we can be sure the people in the gallery really fit is the group of people who've posted their pictures. You seem to embrace labelling people. Just don't.

"Presumptions"? "Labelling people"? I'm not really sure what in the whole two sentences I wrote on this topic might have triggered this outburst. My post, in its entirety:

Does that mean that being white linked to being "more computer savvy"?
My hypothesis is that nonwhites might hesitate to post their photos because they might enjoy the novelty of participating in conversations with whites as individual personalities, rather than as "the black guy", or otherwise as presumed representatives of a group.

The first sentence points out a possible consequence of an answer you suggested. There is no value judgement there. I simply don't know whether whites are more likely to be computer savvy than blacks on the whole, although given that the black population is younger on average, I don't necessarily assume that their exposure to computers would be less.

The second is a possibility that occurred to me that might account for the perceived scarcity of nonwhite DUers. That's all.

A little hard to "get off it", when I was scarcely on it to begin with...

138. It's possible that it is not a random sample but ...
there really is almost no convincing reason that people of color would be less likely to post their pictures than white people. Moreover, the numbers are low for African Americans, Asians and Latinos, and you would expect that if there was some convincing reason blacks posted at a different rate from whites that the same would not apply to other minority groups. Lastly, even if the gallery is not a completely representative sample, and let's say whites were 200% more likely to post pictures than blacks, that would still put the percentage of DUers who are black at only 3%.

Finally, there is the subjective perceptions of people of color who do participate in DU -- that there is a general atmosphere of racial cluelessness in a lot of threads.

I just think it is hard to dispute the fact that despite its many good features, DU is not as diverse as the Democratic Party or the country in general.

50. In a few ways, like
1. They embarass their father, mostly in harmless ways
2. Laura really IS beautiful
3. They add a touch of Humanity and normality to an otherwise evil and sociopathic family
4. And after all, they didn't choose their parents. As spoiled brats go I think they're relatively decent ones.
5. Of course, I'd rather spend an evening with Chelsea Clinton, who would be interesting good company even if I were sober :-)

60. Sounds like I'm in good company. Never was a full blown Mel Tillis
stutter and by 5th grade I grew out of it. I also had illegible "lefty" handwriting. I remember being sad because all 2nd grade, I never got a little shiny star sticker (remember them?) on any of my compositions. One day, my dad took me to the teacher's supply store and we bought a giant box of them. I put stars on all my own work and everything else for that matter. It was great.

77. Glad you alerted me so I won't insult you
I got people in my church riled up by saying something like "oh, we were always afraid to go there - there were rumors that they were so inbred that they had webbed feet".

Well, 2 out of the 10 people at the meeting had webbed feet, and let me know in no uncertain terms that it was NOT a result of inbreeding.

I was then telling the story at a family gathering (sort of a "what are the odds" thing) and my SIL got all huffy "Well, I have webbed feet, and not because of inbreeding!"

I believe the people at church. The jury is still out on my Red State/Red-Voting SIL, however.

How many of you people arethere?

We've ALL got to stay and give the fascist theocrats hell.

Now, where do men tend to be shorter than the American average? Oh, many places. Southeast Asia, parts of the Andes region, Lapland...

In the US, men seem most likely to be shorter than the national average in New England, although that may just be my personal impression. Of the total number of male teachers I had in school (about 15, I think, and all Caucasians as far as I could tell), six of them were about 5'5'' or under; four would have been between approx. 5'5'' and 5'8''; three of them were somewhere in the 5'8'' to 6'0'' range; and two of them were clearly over six feet tall. Of course, that's a small sample, and my memory might be faulty; on the other hand, I've gotten a better idea of how tall some of these people were after meeting some of them again after I'd grown.

Dunno why, but I just find this sort of thing interesting. I started noticing traits like height more in 10th grade, when we did our unit on genes and phenotype in Bio. Some of our local averages (height, eye color, hair color) seemed to differ from the national averages.

99. I didn't vote for Kerry.
'Course that isn't to say I voted for Bush or even that I voted at all. Besides, what is "voting" after all? The etymological origin of the word is a most interesting story. Its immediate origin in is the Middle English "vow" which descended, through French, from the Latin "vo:tum" which in turn was the past participle (neuter gender) of the verb "vove:re," which also meant "to vow." Ultimately of course, all these words descended from the Proto-Indo-European *wegh(w)h-, also *eugh(w)h- or suffixed o-grade form (past tense) as *wogh(w)h-eyo- which meant "to preach" or "to speak solemnly." Obviously, over the years, the literal meaning gave way to a more figurative or metaphorical meaning, giving rise to expressions like "your vote is your voice." Oh, yeah. Why didn't I vote for Kerry?

I'm too young.

when I was a kid, I had a dentist, or should I say sadist, who insisted his drill was special and didn't require novocaine. I should find him and kick him in the kneecap.

Now, I insist on nitrous, even for cleaning. Dang those cleanings hurt!

139. Well, I"ve never tried nitrous...
but my daughter won't face the drill without it, but mainly because her pediatric dentist never does one without it, unless there's nothing to it. I got really drunk once when I was 13, at my cousin's house, and didn't like the way I felt, not in control of my body. It was as much fun to me as an ear infection. So, I've never gotten really drunk, or done pot or recreational drugs of any kind, believe it or not. But, at the same time, I have no problem with legalizing them either.

117. hmmm...
I speak and can read multiple languages. Although, I need some serious practice to get back to being fluent.

I have been unemployed for 18 months.

My house is filled with statues and busts of the goddess Athena.

I frequent the Atheist room, the Theology room, and started the Ancient wisdom room!

When faced with difficult situations or situations that went poorly, I act them out by myself, complete with conversations! That is a really weird thing I do.

And, I say a prayer to Artemis every time I see a dead animal.

I think I have said too much....another problem I have...I am verbose!

I think Harry Truman was bad for starting loyalty oaths and dropping, not one but TWO, nuke bombs on japan. nobody will EVER convince me THAT was necessary. I don't like Clintons for way too many reasons to list(though I picked up for him against the vast right wing conspiracy and voted for him). Despite his eloquent anti-war speeches, I think Robert Byrd is one of the nastiest homophobes ever ( I have seen him, bible in hand, raging against the homosexual agenda on C-SPAN) and I think the Kennedys are highly overrated and have heard horror stories about them from locals in Hyannisport. The whole "Camelot" thing makes me roll my eyes. I DO like Teddy ok as a politician but still...I dont WORSHIP that family like many seem to.

I don't mean to be rude, I just enjoy reading DU and posting a comment here or there. I've gotten into a few unpleasant arguments and generally try to avoid them. There are all kinds of people here. I'm not here to make either enemies or friends, just follow/add to interesting or humorous discussions.

Oh, and I'm one of the older DUers at 59. Hippie generation and all that. I know there are a few here like me in this respect.

152. Hrmmm..
I listen to everything from Louis Armstrong to Tupac. Right now, Im obsessed with hip hop. Real hip hop, not little kim or 50 cent.

I am anti-abortion.

I am a 26 year old woman who could give a shit less about staying in the rat race and feel that children should be raised by a family, not a school system and television. I dont get miffed over most of today's feminist issues. I honestly would be thrilled to put my energy into making good healthy meals for my family, not take out... I like to have a clean house. I'd love to have the time to be involved in the local community.

I'm a Christian. I also tried Buddhism and Wicca in various phases of my late teens and early 20s.

I read Tarot Cards.

I actually have a job that hasnt been outsourced in technology and this year has been a truly blessed year for us financially.

Im a transplanted Californian that is actually starting to like the people of the south. They have been some of the kindest people Ive ever encountered.

I'm considering buying a weapon for protection.

We have a 5 year plan to get off the grid and deep in the forest or mountain somewhere.

I do believe we are living in a time that will be disasterous for the human race. Be it global annihilation, extreme weather, astroid or rapture. Suffice to say, Ive always wanted to be a mom but we arent having any children.

It gets pretty smoky in here when there are a lot of interesting threads to read. Like tonight, for instance.
