Poll question: What Is The Most Important State In The Union?
Choose the state, that if it dropped into the ocean today, would cause the most harm to America.

1. Depends how you define 'important.'
Pretty broad question, IMHO.

With 50% of the nations GDP, California is definitely the most important state.

27. That's irrelevant.
The global economies revolve around the stock exchanges in New York and Japan.

If any large population fell into the sea it would be an horrific thing with a world-wide impact. But it wouldn't crash the economies of most of the civilised world if California were gone.

No Iowa, no food. (well, a lot less food, anyway.) Plus, it's a pro-Dem state in the middle of the country--a rare thing indeed.

Edited on Sun Sep-28-03 07:34 PM by Padraig18
If eating is important, then they don't get much more important than California and Illinois, although any heavily-agricultural Midwestern state would qualify.

23. We may find out
According to a book I read back in the '70s (The Earthquake Generation), California was supposed to drop in the ocean back in 1990 or so. Edgar Cayce said it would be 1998. In any case, the tidal wave would be 800 feet high and travel several times around the world. This would take out just about all the states mentioned here. My house sits at about 900 feet above sea level so I guess we're okay.

25. New York, not California
NY has had its share of tragedies and if it dropped off...

California has given us Hollywood, who have dumbed down society just to make a buck and has given us overpaid actors who don't know (or care) about people, right Ronald and Arnold?

Yeah, I'm cynical. Nobody's perfect. :-(
