5. Beware of Diablo II...

it will rob you of your time blind! Pointing and clicking your way through countless hours is not a game.

Try the Final Fantasy series or several other of the RPG games out there that have a plot.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a prick. Just giving my two cents. I've seen friends of mine gain a lot of weight playing that game. :-(

I'm already playing Final Fantasy Tactics on my GBA.. and I have Final Fantasy X waiting for me to play on the PS2.

I was a Diablo-2-cholic. I finally gave up and quit after losing most of my valuables on a game crash two years ago. Of course, the site wouldn't even reimburse rare items.

Planning your advancement through the skill trees is pretty critical, in the long run. However, sometimes you don't know what kind of high level skills you want until you've tried them. Like many DiabloII junkies (such as myself), you may end up with two characters of the same class. I have one barbarian where I tried out several different skills in a kind of hopscotch array. I learned from my mistakes and my next barbarian was much more successful.

It's not very handy right now (no pun intended), but after you finish the game you can use it to open up a secret level. The secret cow level, in fact.

In Act II, you will have acquired the Horadric Cube. After you kill Baal, go back to Act I and get Wirt's leg, and a Tome of Town Portal. Go to the Rogue Encampment, put the leg & tome in the cube, and transform them. A secret portal opens up to the very dangerous (and utterly hilarious!) Secret Cow Level. MooOOOOOOooooo

The way the cows say "moo" made me laugh so hard I almost could not fight them. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but I can see how one could get slaughtered were he surrounded by cows with voulges. Bad way to go, eh? :P

19. Cow levels are great

for rare items. I once found a Stone of Jordan there. I also got some valuables there. I had my Level 99 javazon named DustPuppy helping nuke these cows.

An (imaginary) SoJ for those who can tell me who DustPuppy is from.

I can't remember when you can't use a Wirt's Leg to open a cow level. Does anyone remember? It has been some time, and I *still* have D2 on disk somewhere.

23. You can only do it once per skill level

Once each after you've killed Baal (or Diablo, if you haven't gotten the expansion set). It kinda sucks, but it does make it special.

I haven't gotten any better items out of the Cow level than any other level. Luck of the draw, I think.

I need to reinstall diablo II on my computer. Once I get my laptop working online I'm going to reinstall it. I have a friend (from DU) who has kept my account active. We play on USEast at Battle.net and my account is IcePrincessZoso (I have a killer Zon and Sorc).

You can only go so far playing solo and then it just gets old. I prefer online.

24. OK, help me out with DII.

I had a lot of fun playing diablo 1. I used the rogue and basically just shot all my emenies before the could get close to me. I've tried this in DII, and it works, but something about using ranged weapons just isn't that fun. And plus you can't use shields. But when I try and get a decent melee weapon and shield, I die quickly and embarassingly. A small swarm of pixies can could finish me off, licketey split. How the hell are you supposed to fight melee?

30. Sword & shield tips

First, choose a character that works well with this combo. Barbarian, druid, paladin - all these can be successful with sword & shield, whereas the other classes have talents that require the use of other weapons.

Finding a good shield can be difficult. The most important aspect of a shield is its chance to block. I found one with a 50% chance of blocking - best damn shield I ever had. Elemental resistance is also a good thing.

For a weapon, find one with a very good attack speed. Choose this over a slower weapon that does more damage. It's more important to hit them often, especially when that swarm of pixies surrounds you.

Lastly, advance in skills that work well with your weapon preference. Paladin has some good skills that work with a shield, though he does prefer a mace to a sword. Barbarians have lots of attack/damage skills, but many of them work best with using two weapons (sword/sword or sword/axe are popular).

44. It's not that she ain't no good

It's that she won't be as good as other classes (amazon, paladin, barbarian), for a number of reasons:

-In order to be good at melee, you have to have good Strength. She starts out with lower strength than others, and when she advances in levels, her points are better spent in intelligence, for the mana benefits.

-Strength is also required to use the big weapons. Also armor. If she develops good strength, she won't be able to cast the spells she will need to defeat the enemies she will have to face.

-Most of her special skills revolve around spellcasting, and very few of them are good for melee attacks.

She can probably do well with a sword, if she finds the right sword, but the strength requirements for some of the better weapons will hinder her efforts.

The LOD expansion is way better than the basic game--adds runes and junk
and install the new 1.10 patch...makes it much more difficult

There is a mana regenerating skill that must get capped,
but it still not enough later on against powerful foes .

He suggests a necro , rely heavily on Golems until
you can totally max out your fire golem ..

The easiest class is the paladin, the thorn skill
get vicious and you have a nice heal skill. At the
end you can convert your enemies to do your bidding .

if you're a sorceress and you're using a melee weapon, its time to die..

make sure you max out your masteries as well as your individual skills, it will help out trememdously.

it's best to concentrate on one skill and not "spread it around" as far as points go.

i can't wait for world of warcraft personally.. :)

42. My sorceress which successfully completed all difficulties

I actually had skills from all three skill groups. I put many points into forst nova, fire wall, and thunderstorm(from reading the guides I don't think anyone else plays this way). My strategy was to freeze them and then cast fire on top of them. Once I had strength in decent armor, I put points equally in energy and vitality. I had armor socketed with three perfect skulls for replenish life and mana regeneration. All my items had lots of regeneration and +to skill levels. I did not find her too difficult to play but I've been playing the game for a while. The key in the higher difficulties is not getting hit. Magic allows you to atttack without having to be close enough to get hit. I had a barbarian hirling too, which helped key enemies away from me.

35. Since you're playing a sorceress, you need to pick your path early on

Some classes, like amazons and paladins, you have more leeway to make stupid mistakes in allocating skill points and still have a playable character. Sorcies are much tougher, if you're trying for an optimal build which doesn't die too much. Especially in a hardcore game, you need to have a plan.

In the pleistocene evolution of sorc strategies, people were big on the add-to-all-skills items, like combining Culwen's Point, Tarnhelm, and Saigon's set shield. Problem there is you have to pump your strength at the expense of improvements to mana. So a "second wave" of sorcs emerged, who focused almost exclusively on faster cast "tweakers". There's plenty of middle ground, though. I recommend you read this page:

You need to plan early for the skills you'll max, the skills you'll improve somewhat, and the ones you'll ignore entirely. Likewise, you pick and choose the items you use, the items you mule for later, and the items you ignore or sell. Assuming you took your character all the way to level 99, you'd have about 108 total skill points to allocate.

Something else worth considering is the quantum leap points, for when your character can learn multiple new skills. Sometimes you'll want to save up more than one skill point to use at one of the critical points, to start on several skills at once.

Oh, by the way, you'll also want to quit your job, end all social relationships, pay your utility bills in advance, and get a large supply of easy-to-eat snackfoods. This game will devour your life and when you come out the other side there'll be a lot of crap to deal with; they don't call it Diablo for nothing.

I was one of the "circle of 1000" who tested the game in its infancy. So were two other guys in the office, as one of them knew the guy at Blizzard who did the network programming. We played many a LAN and WAN session at the expense of our collective sanity...

It would be an understatement to say that my work habits suffered as a result.

When we were just a bunch of Warcraft fiends, it was okay, because you really can put an absolute limit to how long a game of Warcraft lasts -- when the peasants clearcut the last of the forests, yer into the endgame, like it or not. And since I got my butt kicked 2/3 of the time, it was easy to jump right back into work. Hell, it's a great excuse: "Yeah, I botched the opening because I was thinking about that one subroutine." Then you dive back into debugging, and no one can call you on it cos it's what you're supposed to be doing anyway.

Diablo is a bit more open-ended than that. The initial rush of fun is meaningfully limited only by network speed and bladder control. It's a farking life wrecker. Beware.

48. It's slow but not difficult. I have a merc with cold spells, a wood

spirit and dire wolves at about 12 so the passive life bonuses keeps
everyone healthy while I stand nick away at the baddies.

I haven't tried this strategy b4 and it seems to work pretty well. That and a bow that runed out to the max <grin>
