Goddamned Full Framed f-ing DVDs
Edited on Fri Dec-31-04 08:56 PM by Rabrrrrrr
And g---amned fucking braindead idiot shitknockers who watch them.

Why the hell do they even make these (@&(*^%# things?

Now I'm stuck watching a full frame version of Thunderbirds because half of America is filled with people too goddamned stupid to watch a movie.

Fuck them. And fuck full frame movies. Fuck them all. And fuck the people who watch them. Fuck you all!!

Thanks for ruining my movie, jackass filth.

And get a brain and learn how to watch a movie in widescreen, THE WAY THEY WERE SHOT, DUMBASSES!!!!

When I'm president, the test to be able to vote will be "Do you think the manufacturers are cheating you out of movie when the image has black bars on the top and bottom?"

If they answer yes, they won't be able to vote. Because they will be too dead from the execution to vote.

DAMMIT!! IDIOTS!!!!!!

has no reason to exist. Really. Anyone who buys "The Matrix" in fullscreen deserves a beating.

Have you seen the pan n' scan of Ghostbusters? My god. Really horrible digital camera and frame moves.. it makes a film major weep.

That's the film that always comes to mind when I think of pan and scan. I remember watching that for the first time (it was on TV) and I was wondering why the hell the screen was shifting so much like that.

51. What's wrong with full screen?
Just kidding. Drived me nuts. I had a full screen VHS of 'Tora! Tora! Tora!' that would make me pull my hair out when they would pan back and forth during the Japanese conference. One of the first things I replaced with a wide screen version when DVD's came into the market.

No matter how many times I've explained to my brother-in-law that fullframe is from the devil and that, in fact, it's fullframe that cheats him out of image, not widescreen, he still just doesn't get it.

He got Van Helsing for my nephew for Christmas. In fullframe. What's the fucking point?

I wouldn't be surprised if the ROTK extended version that my sister bought my BOL was in full frame. In which case, you REALLY have to ask "what's the fucking point?"

At least my niece, who's very hip and smart, understands, and she is a widescreen swearby as well.

24. You have to SHOW them why
Exactly. The best way to convince people that widescreen is better, is to show them by example. Here is a great site of examples.

I think the following example is perfect:

16. Great litmus test:
"Do you think the manufacturers are cheating you out of movie when the image has black bars on the top and bottom?"

I can use this for lots of things; screening potential dates, clients, anyone I work with or hire. It's a much less intrusive way of finding out someone's intelligence, taste, and judgement.

I thought the whole idea behind DVD was the ability to watch a movie in widescreen, but most DVD's are full screen. What a waste. I suppose when people all get their new widescreen television monitors, they'll figure it out. Maybe.

I think that when the shitknocking morons get their widescreen TVs, they're going to bitch because of the wide black bands on the right and left hand side of the screen.

Seriously, they're too stupid to be allowed to breed. This really is an excellent point at which to separate the unwashed cattle from the human beings.

17. I agree.
It's really a simple concept. Traditional television screens and movie screens aren't the same shape. If they don't letter box them, they either have to distort the picture, or cut the edges off to fit it on a tv screen.

19. Rabrrrrrr you speak for me
Last week, while visiting my mom, I put in Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkeban. I only buy widescreen and my mom said something about the bars. I told her that widescreen is how the movie was shot by the director and to view it any other way is to change the way the artist intended the movie to be seen.
My mom then said, well I bought a big TV so that I could see everything!

It's times like these when I KNOW, JUST KNOW there is a family out there wondering what happened to their child. Surely I am not related to these people! I cannot be.

DVD and they were full frame.

So I captured my laserdisc widescreen video, merged the better video with the higher quality DVD audio, made a new 16 :9-friendly DVD out of the amalgamation of the sources. Yes, I'm that nutty.

(For poorer quality LDs I also cleaned up the video and sound before making my for-use DVD. I still bought the DVD for license reasons, but I still have both so it's okay. )

I was over at a friend's house (well actually it was his parents house...he was visiting them on vacation)...and these are your upper middle class, keepin up with Joneses kinda people. His mom unfortunately voted for Bush though my friend is very liberal.

Anyways, they bought a nice big suburbanite home and a nice widescreen TV.

They have all these DVDs they've bought over time, but guess what? They're all FULL FRAME! That means they have a TV which hardly ever even comes in use. My friend and I asked his mom, and she was like, "well your dad always wanted the fullscreen DVDs"

Of course they have enough money, where they'll most likely just the buy the same fuckin things all over again.

I have been buying widescreen movies for quite a while. A couple of times, I have bought a movie and didn't realize til I got home that it was 'fullscreen'. I had to return it for the widescreen version. Itjust can't be watched. Speaking of...just like in politics, where cutting down trees is for healthy forests. Calling those dvd's 'fullscreen' really is wrong. They should change it to half movie.

... or "Prohibited User Options". They allow the manufacturer of the DVD to disable certain DVD commands during certain portions of the disc.

Which is another reason to get DVD backup software. Some of the better programs will disable PUOs on the backed-up copy.

37. Heh: for once I am grateful to live in a PAL@50Hz country
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 09:37 AM by Kellanved
No Pan&Scan, practically no "Full Screen" DVDs and "Full screen" movies on TV are extremely rare.
And also PAL Speedup (especially when corrected) is a lot easier to stomach than the NTSC Judder.

Of course even "Widescreen" releases are usually not as widescreen as the cinema version.

41. First time I watched TV on a PAL TV set ...
... it actually bothered my eyes a little, particularly in bright scenes. The 5fps makes a difference.

38. Saw King Arthur in full frame
When I picked it up at the video shop, I thought it would be widescreen. Turned out panned & scanned. Merde. And you could tell that you're missing something throughout the film. I thought it might have been a scheme to nudge folk into buying the unrated version in widescreen. Another visit to the shop and I saw the unrated version below eye level. My fault for being asleep at the wheel.

It was an all right popcorn flick, but I wouldn't see it again.

40. Er, couldn't you take it back and get a widescreen version?
Just asking.

43. Ah! The dark at the top and bottom.
Popped my very first DVD into my very first DVD player on my very first flat screen TV and there was a black area top and bottom of the screen.

"WTF" I am thinking, "I got a defective DVD."

But then I am 180.

180

46. Amen brother!
Why the FUCK do they even make pan and scan DVDs of movies?! :argh:

The only pan and scan DVDs I own are TV shows and animes that were originally filmed that way.

My aunt, otherwise a very intelligent person, can't seem to understand why full screen is the devil even though I have taken many an opportunity to explain it to her. Then again she calls widescreen "mailbox" so I think she's just a lost cause...had to listen to her whine about "mailbox" when I showed her Return of the King EE.

47. I SO agree! Ban them all!

I used to be you'd get both formats on the same disk. That was cool. Now they split them up for more profits. Twice I've accidentally bought the full screen versions and I nearly had a conniption when it stick it in the player. I race back to quickly exchange them raging on the road. Full Screen! Full Screen! AAAAAH! My night is RUINED!

They will go away eventually. Once HDTV becomes the standard everyone will eventually have 16.9 sets and only wide screen will be purchased then.

There was an article on The Onion last year:

Non-Widescreen Version Of DVD Received As Hanukkah Gift
BROOKLYN, NY—Self-described film buff Tyler Rosenstein was disappointed to receive a non-letterboxed "full screen" version of the movie The Matrix Reloaded as a Hanukkah gift, the 19-year-old...
I wish I has Onion premium to get the whole story.

52. Unfortunately...
...there is a trade-off here. NTSC color TV only has 535 horizontal scan lines, and when you watch in wide-screen, you turn a third of them off. This reduces resolution on an already low-res system. Either you shell out thousands on a hi-def widescreen TV, accept a picture with only 300 or so scan lines, or buy the pan-and-scan version. None of those options are particularly appealing.

56. Don't worry... Karma will get them soon
when 16-9 TV's become popular, fullscreen loonies will be paid back with VERTICAL BLACK BARS... mwhahahahaha. justice will come soon.

It would help if we all started calling fullscreen "chopped movie", or "choppedscreen".

Btw, about the black boxes, they are GREAT for someone like me who needs the captions on and don't want them to interfere with the picture :).
