Anyone see "Beyond the Sea" yet?
In my area we have multiplex cinemas out the wazoo but this movie is only showing in one of the multiplexes and an art theater. Plus that, our local movie critics in the papers panned the hell out of it. The seemed to have a problem with fortyish Kevin Spacey playing an early twenties Bobby Darin and chasing after y0ung Katie Bosworth's, Sandra Dee character.

They summed it up by saying "Who cares about Bobby Darin in 2005?" What putzes these critics turned out to be.

So how about it? Anyone see it yet and how was it?

1. I don't know, but I think it would be fun to see

I'll probably wait for it to come out on DVD though.

I thought I heard somewhere that Spacey actually did the singing for the movie, is that true?

on edit:

And to the naysayers, nobody cared about Jim Morrison in the 90's when they made the movie The Doors either, but the movie was still fun. Nobody cared about Richie Valens when they made La Bamba, but the movie was popular, and the soundtrack by Los Lobos was a hit. BOOOOOOOO to the naysayers :)

2. Me, me!
I enjoyed it, although IMO it started off kind of slow. Our critic panned it too, and I could see some of their points -- the "framing" device was kind of over-cute. But I loooooved the music, I loved the Sandra Dee romance, and I really enjoyed the bits about writing his 60s antiwar anthem, which I didn't know about. I really was touched by that song and wish I'd hear more of it.

Did you see it already?

3. Not Yet but I will soon
Both cinemas are on the other side of town but I probably venture out to the art cinema.

4. I'm planning to see it in the theatre.
I like Kevin Spacey all right, but more to the point, I love Bobby Darin's work, particularly the "loungey" stuff.

The CD from the Ultra-Lounge series is superb, but I can't seem to find it on Amazon.

5. Well, Spacey CAN sing...really.
He blew more than a few minds with his rendition of John Lennon's "Mind Games" at "The Concert For New York." And while Bobby Darin's footprint in rock & roll history may not be as big as Elvis Presley's, he EARNED a place. He was unique. He made a mark. We should all be so lucky.

7. I care about Bobby Darin. I'd love to see his story.
However, the critics have an excellent point about 46-year-old Kevin Spacey playing 24-year-old Bobby Darin.

I'm having a really hard time buying it myself, and haven't decided whether to see the movie (and I LIKE both Kevin Spacey and Bobby Darin).
