What can I make with a Toaster Oven?
Edited on Mon Dec-27-04 08:12 PM by Jack_Dawson
I'm really excited I got a Toaster Oven for Christmas (a very nice one, btw). I can make toast, grilled cheese and stuffed mushrooms. Other than that, I'm not sure what to do with it.

Any ideas?

Thx!

bit about toast-r-ovens?

41. In the final (I think) episode of Ellen...
...there were many lesbian cameos, and one of them (Melissa Etheridge, maybe?) made a joke about the idea that LGBTs "convert" people into being gay; turn a certain number into lesbians and you get a toaster oven. It's become an in-joke and code word among women who sleep with women. ("Just got my toaster oven!")

:)

36. What I do
is first bake the potato in the microwave to soften it. Then cut it into eighths lengthwise, place them on the baking sheet in one layer, and spray it with cooking spray or oil and bake it at 350 until they are crispy. :)

Anything you would toast and anything you would make in the oven (broil/bake) you can cook in the toaster oven.

16. Unagi (sea eel) is a type of sushi that always gets finished up in the
toast-r-oven in the sushi bars I've been to (which is quite a lot). It's sushi because it's on the little rice dealy, I'm not sure raw is a precondition even though most sushi is raw. Lots of other sushi bar items, dynamite rolls etc. are also finished up in the toast-r-oven. A good sushi bar is a good place to hang out to see the toast-r-oven possibilities.

10. Keep it unplugged when not in use...
Neighbors of ours had a horrible fire in their house when an electrical storm zapped their toaster oven on when they weren't at home. It was only a couple of weeks ago, so their Christmas was less jolly as a result.

What to cook? Be creative in your sandwich making. Try hot turkey, or a tuna melt...

Enjoy! :D

32. Because at that time (we weren't married yet) I was living in
Edited on Mon Dec-27-04 08:41 PM by qnr
the basement of a house, where I had installed walls, electricity, plumbing (repaired the old toilet and shower), etc. There was no oven (or any other appliances - except the washer and dryer that was in the other section of the basement). It was great for me (I was a bartender at a casino at the time), after she moved in, we lived that with the those two things until we got around to renting another place.

Edit: Sure, it's not "better" - but you'd be surprised what you can do with them, without having to fire up the real oven.

Edited on Mon Dec-27-04 08:39 PM by mcscajun
It takes some trial and error and finagling, but I've baked Pillsbury's Grands Biscuits in mine, along with 'from scratch' cookies (only a few at a time, of course), and I'm going to try making scones in it next.

Meat loaves and baked ziti in small foil pans work very well, too. Also 'store mix' brownies in foil pans.

The constant seems to be this: Use whatever broiler pan comes with the oven to raise the 'baking pan' they provide up from the bottom heating element. This reduces the issues of the lower element burning your creations. And always use the baking pan under foil pans, especially if it's something that may spill over (like meat loaf or anything with cheese.)

he used it to reheat chicken wings, left overs, bagels, etc. You can get lots of use out of them. If yours is a broiler type you could do a burger or fries. Pizza reheating is a plus..

42. Muffins are good!
You have to buy a 6 cup size muffin pan to fit the toaster oven. Did it come with any special sized baking pans? I can't remember if you have to buy those separate or not. If you have the smaller baking pans then you can buy the small baking mixes like the Jiffy mixes and make brownies, cakes, cornbread, etc.

Also, they have biscuit cans that are just 5 biscuits and that's perfect for the toaster oven. I love to use my toaster oven especially in the summer as it doesn't heat up the whole house to use it.

Have fun!

47. premix and shape cookie dough and put in freezer. Make 2-3 cookies
at a time. Any cookie dough that can be frozen works like a charm.

We use ours for breakfast sandwiches. We microwave the egg/egg sub in the microwave in a cooking-spray coated dish that makes 2 square scrambled egg things. (Don't use the microwave with anything but scrambling eggs.) Slices of ham or canadian bacon grill in the toaster while that's happening, then toast goes in with american cheese on two slices and plain on the other two. When it all comes out, it's all ready to be assembled - toast, egg, meat, cheese toast. Serve with fruit and milk.

Mr. Pcat is paranoid about the stove in the mornings when he's not awake so we never use the stove in the morning. (don't ask, I don't understand it... it's a gas bloody stove... we can see and HEAR it when it's on... but that's who he is.)

48. Hot Melted Cheese With Apple...
you get some nice whole grain bread.
you slice some apples (or banana) thinly onto the bread.
you put cheddar (or munster) cheese on top.
you bake it until the cheese is all hot -n- melty.

scrumpt-illi-umptious!!

(I second the baked potato thing too - for some reason they come out really good from the toaster oven)
