Poll question: need vs. want
if you see something in a store that you would like to have, do you use "i want that.." or "I need that..." when asking someone or convincing yourself to get it.

2. Neutral
Up to two or three years ago, would have had to have said Want. But I'm learning to control myself, finally.

3. It depends on what it is.
If it's just a like-to-have as you say, I usually have a little mental dialog that goes, "I really want that!" "But you don't NEED it!"

And I usually manage to talk myself out of it too.

5. Heh. Same here.
Really the only "needs" are those connected with basic food, clothing, and shelter, transportation, and health. You have to get to work, for example and you have to go to the doctor if you are ill. Everything else can be classified as a "want."

After that, it's a matter of degree and affordability:

I "have to" buy fresh produce and some healthful protein source. I "want to" go to that new French restaurant down the street and enjoy a nice meal.

I "have to" at least listen to the radio to see if work or school is open in inclement weather. I "want to" have cable TV.

I have to pay the car insurance. I want to afford the insurance for a new Audi.

6. Another parrot is a want. A better quality camera is a need.
A parrot won't get me a good paying job.

A good quality camera might.

7. I don't have the luxury of being able to want things I don't need
I look at things and think "I'd like to have one of those someday." I live paycheck to paycheck. I haven't bought any new clothes for at least two years, maybe longer. I can't think of anything I've bought for myself within that time that wasn't something I really needed. I don't see any of that changing with Bush in office for another four years.

8. Some decades ago
a friend from a very wealthy family was carrying on about what he "needed." (A high-priced Martin guitar). I took that opportunity to discuss the difference between "need" and "want" as I had other VERY TALENTED friends who NEEDED good instruments and this guy couldn't remember the fingerings of more than 3 basic chords. :SIGH:
