Best Stones song?
And why?

Mine is "Gimme Shelter", simply based on the unbelievable backup singer.

A good case could be made for "Dead Flowers", as well.

What's your favorite?

7. From a Boomer
"Jumpin' Jack Flash" and
"Start me Up"

I'm so old that I remember when "Let's Spend the Night Together" was considered a very dirty song. It was the mid sixties. By 1969, everybody was sleeping with everybody.

8. Me too
I saw her today at the reception, a glass of wine in her ha-a-and.

And "Wild Horses" runs a close second.

You get what you need!

Great backup singing on that one too!

Good choice

2. "Satisfaction".
Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 12:26 PM by mac56
Possibly the best pop single ever released. Add on edit: A great hook, great lyrics, good singalong song, and doesn't everybody need a little satisfaction?

(Not my personal fave, though: that goes to "She Loves You" by the Beatles.)

Other choices:

"It's All Over Now"
"Let's Spend The Night Together"
"Jumpin' Jack Flash"
"Wild Horses"
"Rocks Off"
"Shattered"
"Tumblin' Dice"
"Start Me Up"

4. Paint it Black
It so very well sums up that black feeling you get when you see girls go by dressed in their summer clothes, and yet in your soul is just black sheets of rain.

Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 12:36 PM by fertilizeonarbusto
Anbd the lyrics are actually very intellectually sophisticated-Mick at his best. And how can you not like "ooo-oooh"?
And because no one has mentioned it yet, "Waiting on a Friend"

31. I've always had the opposite reaction to the lyrics....
and thought that they were some of Jagger's worst lyrics. The themes and contradictions of "I'm Free", "Street Fighting Man" and "Satisfaction" are actually more complex than those of "Sympathy For The Devil" He should have just read and enjoyed "The Master And The Margarita" (a great novel)without using it for lyrical inspiration. Keith plays two great solos, though...

You know they sing "woo woo!" for like TEN MINUTES at the end there! I love that song too. :)

I can't decide.

Just gave Through the Past Darkly a spin not too long ago. Just mention any song from that disc and I'll go along with it.

33. I agree with you about that cover of "Gimme Shelter"...
which is really weird, since I've always thought that Sisters of Mercy's whole basso profundo-spooky-Halloween dress-up schtick was beyond ridiculous. But they did pull off the best Rolling Stones cover of anyone. Go figure.

37. well..when i saw "sisters" in concert at avalon in boston a few years back
they were dressed in black with sunglasses and they started pumping the dry ice fog and it was like a concert in a foggy graveyard with murky loud music. I didnt notice any halloween dressup. I hear you tho but still like them anyway!! they do a cool version of knocking on heavens door by dylan too..and comfortably numb by pink floyd

15. "Satisfaction"
If the Stones had done nothing else they would be remembered for that one. It's got everything: attitude, raunch, a beat, and that monster riff.

"Paint it Black" may be a better song though. Same ingredients as the above, but with a sitar.

The Brian Jones era Stones stuff is my favorite.

But I think I've just heard that song too many times! I'm just sick of it, it doesn't give me a thrill to listen to it anymore.

Plus, I think I've been poisoned by the Britney Spears version :puke:

26. Well, if you're feeling poisoned by Brittny
then it's time to slap on the DEVO version!

I agree with you though, about the song being overplayed. Still doesn't detract from it's greatness though.

Picking a favorite or best by the Stones is really almost impossible!

"Brown Sugar" (perhaps their finest moment)
"Let It Loose" I dare you to listen to this, and then tell me that Mick Jagger isn't a good singer)
"Cocksucker Blues" (for the sheer brattiness of it)
"No Expectations" (beautiful)
"Happy" (immaculate sloppiness)

Guess which era of the Stones I like best?

Also, side two of 'Tattoo You" may be the best suite of songs ever written; flows beautifully, and evrey song is a wonderful ballad.

36. Can You Hear Me Knockin'?
Great jam, unlike most other Stones numbers. This was made during the very short tenure of Mick Taylor so the guitar style is a lot different than what we are now used to. 'Slave' off the Tattoo You album is similar.
