How come there are so many Mini Coopers all of a sudden?
Is it just New York? Or is it all over?

2. I heard they were all the rage in NYC
Cheap (ish), fast, and, more importantly, easy to park!

5. They are all the rage here.
I see at least two a day. It seems like I'm even seeing more than that within the last week or so.

They definitely outnumber Hummers!

13. Good. Having a Hummer in Manhattan would be pure idiocy!
I've been to NYC plenty of times. I remember going up the Empire State Building one time and looking down. The city was a criss-cross of yellow--all cabs (and delivery trucks). There's a reason for that! Driving in the city is a fool's errand, in my opinion! Take the subway! Take a cab! Car service! Whatever!

But... if you must have a car, a Mini Cooper would be a pretty good choice.

I always get this reflexive desire to spit when I do. Fortunately, they only appear once ever couple of weeks or so.

21. No, the old mini-cooper was cheap
Edited on Fri Sep-26-03 04:08 PM by lunabush
this is a car smaller than a volskwagen and its 27k (actually 22k, but lets not quibble). That ain't cheap by any definition.

But, it IS easy to park.

6. They're multiplying like bunnies here in SF.
I don't need or want a car right now, but if I did I'd get one. To me they're the perfect city car. Short wheel base, fast even with an automatic (the hills here are hell on a clutch), and the rear seat folds down to create more space to haul stuff. And they're cute too!

18. I've always loved the way they look
and if I had to have a car, I'd seriously think about getting one, mainly for the parking issue.

I had this idea for a Mini commercial a couple of weeks ago. It opens with a medium long shot of a little space between two cars. Suddenly you hear this throbbing sound, and then a big old hideous old canary yellow Hummer blasting some bland rock music drives up. The driver's the only guy in it. He's wearing a cowboy hat and yakking on a cell phone. He slows down in front of the space, yakking, making a half-assed attempt to mentally measure the space, then reluctantly he gives up and drives off. A second or two later, a Mini pulls up. You hear this supremely lovely 1960s era jazz. A hip looking couple is in the front, their child in the back. They easily pull into the spot. A word burns onto the screen: Civilized.

11. The Italian Job
remake featured the new Mini Cooper.

I used to drive the original Mini. I loved that car. Did 120 km drafting behind huge transports - got great gas mileage.

Ok, so I was young and stupid.

24. good product placement
That car was cast in a very complimentary role.

I don't know how much they spent, but it was a good use of budget, IMUO. (in my uninformed opinion)

30. Hi there
:hi:
Welcome to DU.

The original "Italian Job" featured the original Minis. I don't think it was a coincidence that the remake movie and the remake car came out at the same time.

29. They seem to have got down what PT Cruiser and the new Beetle
were aiming at. I hope this is the beginning of the next super trend in cars, this short but ultrastylish trend, and I hope it puts SUVs in their graves.

Prediction: I'll bet we're going to be seeing wooden side station wagons in the next few years.
