Fucking Salvation Army bell-ringers! Grr....
It's not enough that they stood in front of my local grocery store ringing that goddamned annoying bell non-stop. But to add insult to injury, they had a boombox blaring Mariah Carey's Christmas CD!

Did I give them any money? Fuck no! :grr::nuke:

2. Ahh, your Chritmas spirit is bubbling over...
...why should the poor people that they are collecting for get anything anyways? Screw poor people. Screw because of Mariah Carey.

3. No, screw the homophobic, bigoted Salvation Army!
I only donate to organizations that don't discriminate against minority groups.

Did I say that loudly enough? Or were you unable to hear me from your ivory tower?

5. That's nice, assuming everyone lives somewhere where there are...
... lots of such organizations, Unfortunately, in rural America, the Salvation Army is frequently the only (or one of the VERY few) non-governmental social-service agencies in existence.

8. Having grown up and lived in rural America most of my life
Your statement is pure BS.

I've lived in towns with 150 people, and the S.A. wasn't the only game in town.

9. It's not 'pure BS'

A town of 150 people had a social-service agency located there?

11. It is pure BS
It was a locally run charity for children of poor working families.

And it was very successful.

I've also lived in a remote village with 750 people. The S.A. went bankrupt at the same time several independent charities were thriving.

14. Amazing enough that I'm moving back next spring
I guess I'm surprised that a town of 2,900 doesn't have any people willing to start a reach-out program of their own.

4. I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to find a less-homophobic..
charitable organization to support. As far as I know, the Salvation Army isn't the only group out there helping "poor people".

10. EVERY town has locally owned and operated charities
I only give to local homeless centers and other local charities.

I don't give a nickel to the S.A., Goodwill or United Way.

15. Yeah, why give any money to the Salvation Army
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 06:58 PM by quaoar
Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses? If the fucking poor don't have enough to eat then they better go ahead and die and decrease the surplus population.

16. Because they're homophobic bigots, that's why!
Are there not more tolerant organizations that help the poor? Are there not DUers who don't feel the need to come across as pompous jerk-offs?

19. Bah humbug
The Salvation Army is often one of the few social service agencies in a community keeping the lights on for people, providing aid for stranded travlers, giving shelter to house fire victims, etc.

Having served on the board of directors of my local Salvation Army, I know firsthand just how much good the Army does.
