Today is Santa Lucia Day in Sweden. I have a question.
Thirteen years ago, tonight, I had dinner with King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Sophia in Linkoping, Sweden (an intimate affair, with a small party of 600+ in an aircraft hangar). I was in Sweden for a few days before and after the Santa Lucia ("Saint of Lights" in a dark, dark place in December) dinner party with the king. There was one Christmas carol or hymn or song that is associated with Santa Lucia. It was haunting, but I cannot remember the name or find it. Any help from the land of all answers ... DU land?

BTW: King Gustav was the spitting image of Salman Rushdie. And that was during the Fatwa on Rushdie.

5. I'll hook up my speakers tomorrow and take a listen.
That is probably it. Thanks.

3. Does This Look Familiar?

Yes, there is a hymn titled 'Santa Lucia'; it's in Italian.

English translation:
The silver star shines on the sea,
the waves are gentle, the wind is favourable.
Come to my swift little boat!
Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

O dear Naples, o blessed land,
where creation was pleased to smile!
Come to my swift little boat!
Santa Lucia! Santa Lucia!

4. Yep, saw a lot of that costume.
I also saw an indoor fireworks display that scared the shit out of me. It was insane! I guess when it is dark from 3 pm to 9 am, you will do anything for a lift. Lotsa drinking in that country, too. But it is not apparently excessive, like it is here in the cold, dark north country (like Bismarck, ND).

6. I was a Lucia bride as a young girl
I don't have any pics handy, but trust I was blonde and happy looking.

And I'm pretty sure that is the song, based on the credits. I couldn't get it to play for some reason.

It's one of my favorite holidays. :)

8. Does that mean you married on Santa Lucia Day? In Sweden or the US?
I do trust that you were blonde, beautiful, happy .. dressed in white and bathed in light. It did indeed seem to be a good time for a wedding. That little trip to Sweden made me wish I had gone there in 1970, and not to Vietnam, Republic of.

9. No - the Lucia brides are usually 12 or 13 or so
It has nothing to do with being actually married, per se.

My parents were in Sweden in 1970 and got totally harassed for being American. In fact, my dad was physically assaulted by a guy who kept sputtering, "Nixon Nazi American pig!" while my dad struggled to say, "I didn't vote for and I hate the guy!" in Swedish back to him. (No one was seriously hurt.) :D
