They do what they want and I HATE THAT! I cut my own hair these days.

Worst nightmare ever. I had long hair and I wanted a soft "S" wave perm. Well, the stylist swore she knew what she was doing and permed me within an inch of my life. It was curly (I said WAVY) and she burned my head not only at the hairline but all over my head. It was a nightmare!!!!

I hate hairstylist they have such an inflated idea of who they are they don't listen!!!!!!!!!!

4. My longtime colorist....

was touching up my roots, and she left it on for too long and that portion of my hair turned a horrid ashy strawberry color. She is not my colorist anymore. I also got sick of arguing with her that yes, indeed, I can have the same color as Debra Messing. After this disaster, I found another and my hair color is now...Debra Messing red. I moved and now I am scared to go to even the chi chi-est of salons for fear that I will have another disaster.

My hair is falling out due to stress, so maybe i won't need to worry for very much longer.

9. Take a good multivitamin with all of

the B's in it. Particularly biotin. To help stave off the fall out.
Also try getting some lavendar essential oil, be mindful of relaxing your breathing any chance you can think about it...deep, long breaths. Invest in a relaxing meditation type cd, Steven Halpern makes some really good ones.

Have you noticed that Salon lights are now like Department Store lights. What you see "in the store/salon" is NOT THE COLOR or WHAT YOU GET when you walk out into "normal daylight" or "normal roomlight." Arghhhhh!!!

My dream is to open a "Natural Light Salon" with really good products that don't require you to use four different products before you can leave your house. And BAN THE BLOW DRYERS...destroying our hair...but you can't find a "stylist" who can cut the way your hair "GROWS" and make you look good. They all try to Cut to what they want from some manual and when you get home you need to goop your hair and burn it to death to achieve the "style they decided for you!" It' just get's me so angry.

Then after awhile she left the salon and probably the business because she didn't contact any of her patrons. I had some photos where I happened to have the good cut, and took them to other stylists. I found an older woman working in a young/alternative type of salon, and she cuts it just right too. I need only one kind of goo, and it's not obnoxious stuff.

I avoid places that carry Aveda cuz it reeks to high heaven, literally, and they always try to sell you a "system." I also avoid places located in pricey real estate or that have more than six styling stations. They have a lot of overhead so they give you high-upkeep cuts and try to load you up with product.

23. Hmmm. That's funny.

It's happened to me twice and I've had three different doctors tell me it was stress related. Once I got out from under the stress it came back. I had two seperate bald spots that grew back on their own. There may be more than one explanation than an alopecia diagnosis. Stress can do some nasty things to the body.

and almost completely overlooked by most of us. i had no idea either until it happened to me but it really does change your body chemistry. and because its silent or invisible, we have no idea what havoc its doing.

so i definitely agree that stress can do harm but i also know that there are reasons i dont go to any traditional doctor. they want to prescribe and thats usually about it
i see a holistic md and am thankful for it!

and dippity doo?? well I combined those two the day before I went to my first day of Junior High...and I ended up loolking like Little Orphan Annie for my FIRST day of Junior High...I would have preferred suicide of course, but I was not yet shaving and had no access to razors!!!

6. This one stylist wanted my long hair for a hair coloring

class he was taking. I was going with a much shorter style than I had had since I was a little girl, so I said O.K. Well, he hacked off my ponytail MUCH shorter than I had intended. It got worse. In one of the pictures I brought with me, the model had her hair slicked back over her ears. So, he cuts my hair up over my ears. No, no, no. I ended up with this goofy, bi-level, kind of mullet thing going on. Pixie-cut in the front, long in the back. It was bad and it lasted me a long long time.

I have worn my hair long ever since, and this was 25 years ago.

7. I went in for a body wave--I just wanted more texture.

And I really did explain that to the stylist. My hair was already slightly layered, but before the process, the stylist started cutting--she maintained that she was just trimming the ends and evening it up so it would come out all right--but I was starting to get nervous as more hair went in my lap...and I was right. Instead of a wave, I got "supercurls" and looked like a poodle! And my poor hair wasn't long enough to lay down at all, or pin back in a ponytail. Since then I've done all my own cutting and coloring--and have *never* messed with curling my hair again.

10. How do you get the ends straight?

I have long hair don't to the middle of my back and I refuse to go to a stylist, waaay to many bad experiences. So I usually have a friend trim the ends straight across every four to six weeks but I've been trying to figure out a way to do it myself.

Have you found a trick for cutting the ends yourself?

He's trying to hide a balding spot and this hairstylist gave him a fringe which accented it! 18. The trick to finding a good stylist

is to ask friends whose hair you like. Also, talk with the stylist before ever letting him or her touch your hair with product or scissors. I learned these lessons many years ago and have been able to find good stylists ever since.

It's important that you know if you two share the same definition of curly vs wavy, short vs long.

I've more than once had what I thought I'd made clear was just to be a trim to be a full-fledged cut leaving my hair much shorter than I'd wanted. The nice thing is that hair grows, and usually a bad cut is correctable either immediately or within six weeks. Yeah, you may be tolerating hair shorter than you ever wanted for a while, but like I said, it grows.

Back in March I left a stylist I'd had for more than ten years because of political differences. Took me nearly six months and several bad hair cuts to find my latest one who is wonderful.

See, I have REALLY long hair. Or, I should say, had. I just had the stylist at Supercuts cut nine inches off of nasty hair so it's now only mostly long hair. (It hits the bottom of my bra. It used to hit the top of my panties.)

The woman at Supercuts may be getting my trim business now. She loves long hair and hated to cut mine... but that it really needed it.

in which I was to be a bridesmaid, I went to get my shoulder-length layered hair trimmed, so that it wouldn't look so obviously cut. I went to a Hair Cuttery near my house that I'd been to before with OK results. Apparently, I got someone who was fresh out of school and not particularly proficient in English. I made sure to gesture with my fingers how much I wanted taken off.

I didn't have my glasses on while she was cutting, but I noticed that my head was getting lighter and lighter, and she seemed to be evening out the sides over and over. Having been taught not to speak up for myself (esp. not in a stylist's chair: When I was about 5, I had one tell me that if I didn't stop squirming, he'd rip off my arm and beat me with the bloody stump. My mother, sitting there, thought it was humorous. ), I didn't interrupt her to ask what the hell was going on. When she was done and I put my glasses back on, I immediately started crying: My hair was probably two inches long all over my head. What kills me now is that I was embarrassed for being upset that this person had so fucked up my hair.

when I wanted to just hide the grey. I returned to the stylist and she kept insisting that it looked fine. She eventually fixed it.

The worse time was about 6 months ago. I've been trying to not fight my hair and instead encourage the natural curl. The woman went wild with thinning shears and cut off all the curl on the back of my hair. It was totally uneven and a disaster. It was like I had thinning hair on the back of my head and full hair everywhere else. I've had three hair cuts since, new stylist, and she was just able to even out the hair.

24. My worst hair disaster was my own damn fault.

I've been a blonde my entire life.

Once I got into my 30s, my hair started turning that blah dirty dishwater blonde color, so I started lightening it. One day, for no apparent reason, I decided I wanted to try going brunette instead. Not a dark raven brunette, but a nice light brown.

I bought a box of brown hair color.

Anyone who has a little knowledge of hair color will see where this is going.

I applied the color, and voila! Instant brunette. It looked nice. For about twelve hours.

Then it turned green.

Sickly green.

And when I went screaming to a colorist to fix it for me, this is what I learned: Brown hair color has a blue base. And, of course, blonde hair color has a yellow base. I had applied brown color over blonde color.

D'oh!

The only way for her to fix the color was to strip my hair and reapply a blonde color, with no guarantee about the results. I wound up with a strawberry blonde shade, and eventually got back to my regular blonde.

I haven't colored my own hair since.

26. when I was in sr, yr. of high school for a big concert I went

to a stylist with a photo and said can you do this. She said yes. Well she couldn't even get near what I wanted and it was so bad what she did I couldn't repair the damage as it was just a few hours before the concert. What she did with my hair was a total disaster! I actually started arguing with her and asked what are you doing; here's the damned picture!!! I actually went home with semi-wet hair as I wouldn't let her touch it one more second as she had already proven she couldn't figure her ass from her left hand. This gorgeous new dress I had and everything, well I just didn't go to this last concert before graduating and I was crying and so angry. I have thin long hair and stylists just don't know how to work with it; they tell you ANYTHING! (It was not the first time as I had already been to a few stylists and all of them screwed up my hair; pictures seem to mean nothing to these assholes) I mean I bring a photo in and I expect that the person can say yes they can or they can't do it. Is that rocket science or something??? When they screw things up like that, we shouldn't pay them any more than we shouldn't pay a worker or contractor who screws up a roof or siding job for our houses.

I have never been in a shop since then. I keep my hair past my shoulders in somewhat the same style I have had for 300 years, straight and parted a bit to the side. Hey it's thin and fine and fly-away. And there is no point for me trying to have hair like some movie star because thin and fine is thin and fine. I will say one thing, cutting it myself and not getting perms has saved me thousands over the years and I am not crying any more over some fuck-up stylist telling me she can do something she can't.

30. My friend had her scalp burned...

This happened the other day...She went to get highlights done, I'm not sure how this happened but the "stylist" must have left the dye on too long because it literally burned her scalp! She had to go to the ER and get anti-biotic cream to fight off any infection that might occur. The next day some of the hair on the top of her head started falling out...she was a real mess, not to mention pissed off. We are trying to convince her to sue or at least get her money back!!!

You do realize the stuff thats used to highlight hair is extremely dangerous?

Some people will get severe burns even if its applied correctly. The lighter your trying to get the color the higher the concentration of peroxide you you get exposed to.

The higher you pay the more likely you are getting someone with less experience. Thats how it works in the beauty industry. Those who are 'attractive' and young (being less experienced of course) fetch the highest rates.

The old and 'ugly' women with 20+ years experience are forced to work for slave wages in places like SuperCuts, nobody else will hire someone who cant draw the big haircut dollars from men who only care about how big the tits are on the stylist.

Sure there are a few exceptions, but 95% of the industry works like this now thanks to Regis.

Months back, I had some highlights put in that, after a few months, dried my hair too much in the front. If finally got fed up after gradually trimming those split ends for months and well today I got so fed up that I started cutting and ...viola.... I have bangs now. I'm cursing myself. One afternoon my buddy showed up at my apartment with her purse over her head, crying. she had gone to a stylist who did fantastic work for a couple of co-workers. she told the stylist she wanted "something simple and easy to maintain." she said she wasn't paying attention until the second assistant showed up with a second blowdryer. her hair ended up a multi layered wavy/straight congomeration of glamourous excrescence. she cried and cried.

we ended up down at my barber shop ( i'm a guy) where my barber snipped and clipped and gave her hair she could live with.

a couple of weeks later I was getting a hair cut and I told the barber I'd like it short, real short. he gave me a radical buzz cut, boot campers have more hair. when he asked me what I thought I said, it's hair, it'll grow back. he started to get defensive till I reminded him that he gave me exactly what I asked for.

The stylist who had cut it did a wonderful and I had all these stacked layers in the back. I went back to get it trimmed up and the stylist from before wasn't there anymore so I let someone else trim my hair.

So I'm sitting there, expecting to be there awhile as it usually takes a while to trim all those stacked layers but the stylist is somehow done in about 5 minutes. I put on my glasses and look and SHOCK...the stupid stylist had trimmed all my hair into one even layer all the way around!!! My beautiful wedge, gone, gone, gone.

I was in such shock that I paid and left but when I got home I called the manager and had a fit and ended up going back down there and getting a refund. The manager wanted to just 'fix it' but there was no way to put the layers back in as my hair, it was too short at the point. Lord was I upset!

48. Never admit you're going to PLDC!

PLDC means Primary Leadership Development Course. It is the school you go to if you want to be a sergeant in the Army.

I always kept my hair looking like a German banker's. I figured that if I was somewhere terrorists attacked, I wouldn't get shot if I didn't look like an American soldier. And usually I went to this place off-post that cut lots of bankers' hair.

Then I came down on PLDC orders and figured I better get a PX haircut.

So I'm sitting there in the chair and the barber's like "but I never see you in here, why are you here?" Ol' dumbass Jim said "I'm going to PLDC and figured I'd get an Army haircut."

Oops.

Next thing you know, I look like a skinny Kojak. The wench shaved my fucking head. (And it's not like you can stop someone who's set on making you bald once the clippers hit your head; you'll either be bald or you'll have a crewcut so short the only way to recover is to shave it.) That night I went downtown to have some beers, and six places wouldn't let me in because they didn't serve skinheads. "Look, we know you're an American but if we let you in here everyone in the place will leave." So I went to a skinhead bar. Nice guys if you attempt to blend in.
