Poll question: Should I pick up Grandma today?

It is cold, snow/rainy and generally Michiganny here today. Last week, I went to WI to pick up Grandma. She's been over every day. MrG thinks I need a break because I look tired and Grandma has reached that very, very needy, almost childlike stage where she needs a lot of attention. Many times it brings me down. But I adore Grandma. Added to the mix, my daughter is home from school today. I don't think she's sick, I think she's just tired so I let her stay home on the condition that she stay in bed...but Grandma worries about being around sick people and wouldn't it be horrid if my daughter really was sick. So, hit me with your opinion.

1. But where is she staying? You went to pick her up and brought her

to MI, and then did....what?....with her? Leave her outside? In the park?

I say, if you're tired and the kid's not feeling well, and the roads are slippery and crap, leave her be. She'll survive. Unless she is in the park.

4. Hehehehe...I didn't think about how that would sound. I picked her

up and she is staying with my mother. My mother cannot be bothered to pick up Grandma, but she does keep her at their house. It is one of those dysfunctional, twisted family relationship things. My mom didn't want to take her vacation and chuck it out the window. She had to go to the casino because "it's been planned". Thank you for the smile inducing visual. Grandma in the park. ;) :hi:

2. Where Is Grandma Now? At her home, or in a home?

I'm leaning toward the choice of not picking up Grandma.

5. She's at my mom and dad's. They work, and she gets lonely. She

would like to stay here 24 hours a day, but feels that her daughter would get upset. Which is probably true. :hi:

3. I love my grama too but

there comes a point where you just can't handle them. Especially if there is a danger of getting ill, gramas hate being sick. :)

7. Especially this Grandma. She fixates on it. She had part of her lung

removed and even with Dr assurance, she just knows she is not well. :hi:

6. How heavy is Grandma?

I could easily pick up either of my grandmas today; but my paternal grandmother was pretty stout, say, 15 years ago. I'm not sure if I could have picked her up then. Plus, I was a scrawny lad of fourteen.

These days, they're both so slight I could probably juggle them. Although that could lead to broken hips.

8. 89 pounds at the Dr on Monday. Of course she "never trusts any scale

other than Dr. Reisch's", her doctor at home. She was 86 pounds a couple of weeks ago. I think she has some form of anorexia because she focuses on her weight, my weight, the neighbor's weight etc, and what we are or aren't eating. Grandma's a trip, but I think I could pick her up if I had to. :hi:

9. A lot of elderly women don't eat properly

I always remember my late Nonnie always cooking up the most amazing Italian dinners and then she would sit at the table and eat toast while the rest of us gorged ourselves. My dad used to get so mad at her which, of course never helped. I think they eventually just lose their appetite because of the result of eating heavy foods was too much to handle - like heartburn and constipation etc. :(

10. Look into a local 'adult day care" center... basically a day care center

for seniors. Drop off in the morning, pick up in the afternoon.

They provide activities, meals, supervision and so on.

Maybe 2 - 3 days a week, split amongst the family members would alleviate some of the tension, and grandma would totally dig it.

We set that up for my Grandma, and it made a huge difference for all concerned.

14. It's also a great investment as our population lives longer, older...

the big money maker for the future is caring for our elderly..


The day care centers are not too hard to license and set up, and sadly, will be quite profitable.
