DU Group proposal -- Classical Music
From Skinner's "How to Suggest a DU Group":

One of the best things about DU Groups is that members have the ability to suggest new groups to the Administrators of Democratic Underground. If you wish to suggest a group, please follow this procedure:

1. Start one discussion thread in the forum of your choice to tell people about your idea for a DU Group.

I'd like to start a classical music DU group which would be all-inclusive, regardless of one's knowledge or experience with classical music.

Those who are new to classical music could ask questions and learn about the "basic repertoire" of each period.

Members could discuss their favorite composer, performer, and/or recording of a certain piece. (For example, many prefer to hear Mahler's symphonies as conducted by Bernstein or Walter, but I've recently discovered a brilliant recording of his fourth by Maazel.)

Experts in the field (which I personally am not) could share invaluable knowledge and insight. Specifically, I'd like to see those who have spent their lives listening to classical music suggest works that the rest of us might not easily find merely by browsing the local Borders classical section.

This would also be a good forum to suggest online resources such as classical.net.

2. In that thread, you must get responses from at least ten DU members who agree to be active participants in the suggested DU Group. All ten members to respond must have donor stars.

Anyone else out there want a DU classical group?

3. In that thread, members must agree on a proposed mission statement for the DU Group.

Here's an initial proposal, which can be modified if anyone has any suggestions:

"The DU Classical Music Group is open to discussion of any and all periods of classical music (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, Modern), as well as specific works, composers, conductors, performers and recordings. Those who are unfamiliar with classical music are free to ask any questions, no matter how basic, and to use the group as a resource for learning more about the form."

4. When enough members have signed on to join the group and have agreed on a proposed mission statement, one member must officially suggest the DU Group to a DU Administrator (Skinner, EarlG, or Elad), either by contacting them directly, or by posting in the Ask the Administrators Forum. Please be sure to include a link to the thread where members have discussed the proposed Group.

I'll monitor this thread and post the proposal in Ask the Administrators as soon as we have ten affirmative replies by donor-star members.

5. The Administrators will consider the request and make a decision. The Administrators will either 1) Accept the Group as it is proposed, 2) Deny the Group outright, or 3) Ask for changes to the Group or its mission statement which would be necessary for its approval.

6. Once the suggested Group has been accepted by the Administrators, the Administrators will create a new DU Group in the "DU Groups" Category forum, and pin the mission statement of that Group to the top of that Group's forum.

1. As a classical musician
I would love it but there is a music group already and we could use that one. I have no problem with a new group, I was just thinking that there are so many people here with so many interests and tastes in music that it is sometimes fun to just add it to the whole. I will watch and see what happens with this. I would join so count me in if you decide to go ahead with it.

3. Count me in as #2...
I am far from any type of "expert" in the field, but I know what I like in Classical music. I have always found it fascinating how orchestras, octets, quartets, and various other groups can meld such strains together to create phenominal and beautiful music that just allows the soul to float away to places that I've never I knew existed.

I'd love to learn more, and am more than willing to discuss this with others more knowledgeable that I...:D

4. I'd join...
as a lurker at least...

My faves are rebels, like Tchaikovsky and Chopin, with a little Vivaldi on the side, and a little dabbling in the old-time favorites, like Bach.

5. The existing Musicians' Group seems to be focused on
performing pop and rock musicians, with discussions of what kinds of electric guitars to buy and so forth.

I'd join a classical music group. I'm a choral singer with a couple hundred classical CDs.

12. Count me in -
I don't want to post about Classical music in a forum where people are discussing Iggy Pop, etc.

But I'm an amateur pianist and harpsichordist and have a huge collection of LP's and CD's and have been into classical music for over half a century.

6. I'm a casual listener.
Because of my profession, I always choreograph in my head. As I listen, I think if the work would make a good dance. The thing is...almost all do....at least in my daydreams.

8. Absolutely - excellent idea!
Count me in!

(and Bernstein, IMO, knows jack about Mahler - can't stand his recordings. Maazel is an excellent interpreter of Mahler, as are Dennis Russel Davies and some others).

13. Interesting -- I've heard Maazel described as...
...cold, but I love what he does with Tchaikovsky's fifth and Mahler's fourth symphonies.

I'm close to your opinion on Bernstein -- I consider him to be inconsistent ("you never know what you're gonna get").

11. Great idea--I'm actually making a list right now of my classical cd's
Lots are copies I've made, and since I have more than one composer on many, I need to cross-reference so I know what I have!

Count me in!

15. Count me in!
Devoted Wagner fan here, as well as Prokofiev, Orff and Beethoven. I love opera, and the kinds of classical that are best played at maximum volume. :D

16. I'm in
I am not a classical music expert, but I very much enjoy listening to it.

My favorite composers are Handel (and Handel.) I am also the only woman who wanted to walk up the aisle to Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata".

18. How about that creepy Bach thing w/the organ, (can't recall the name)...
that is in some of the old 'evil' flicks. Very heavy pipe organ opening...gloomy, almost deadly gothic thing...:scared:...:)

Well...said I was no expert.......:)

20. Bach's Toccata and Fugue (in D, I think)
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 11:27 AM by CBHagman
That's what you're thinking of.

Anyway, count me in if you're going to have a classical music group. I am currently frustrated by the lack of classical music radio in my area (NPR sliced and diced until it's almost impossible to find classical music in its programming, and even that is limited in terms of the play list). We do have a local classical station in the commercial radio area, but that has its limitations, too.

I watch Classic Arts Showcase on my local community college station. For those of you who haven't seen CAS, it's music videos of jazz performances; modern dance and ballet; opera; chamber, orchestral and solo classical music performances; animation; and classic film. It's been a real help in keeping abreast of what's great from the past and what's new and interesting. They even show clips from the Bell Telephone Hour and the Voice of Firestone series, so you see and hear everybody -- Robert Merrill, Leonard Warren, et al.

I'm very interested in early music and have a particular fondness for the Baltimore Consort and the Toronto Consort, among others. Bryn Terfel is probably my current favorite among opera singers (I love baritones), and Gil Shaham is my favorite instrumental soloist (violin).

22. I love Classic Arts Showcase
I can't wait until I have the hardware to digitally save some of those clips. That's going to be a hugely rewarding collection.

21. Ras, I've been to a wedding before
>that is in some of the old 'evil' flicks. Very heavy pipe organ opening...gloomy, almost deadly gothic thing...:scared:...:)<

at which the recessional was the "Tocatta and Fugue". It was loud and it was certainly different ;-).

Thankfully, we have a great classical music station here (KING-FM, it streams on the Web!) and at least one radio personality will play the "Moonlight Sonata" recording on balmy summer nights with full moon.

I'm slowly building a classical music library. I think this group would be interesting and a great source of information.
