3. I read a previous thread by you (I think) about "Lion of the Desert" but
I can't seem to find it. I even went to Borders to buy it.
What is "Battle of Algiers" about?

6. The Battle of Algiers
Probably too "controversial" for cable these days.

It's about a group of young people fighting the French during Algeria's war of independence. The part that is probably keeping it off cable is that they resort to bombing public places.

The film neither condemns nor condones the use of terror. Instead, it explores the reasons that they start bombing and their ambivalence that the people have about their own tactics.

You get to know the members of the group, and as they are pursued by the French police, you find yourself hoping that they will escape, which is disturbing as you think, "I'm rooting for the terrorists."

It is a worthwhile experience, but definitely not a comfortable one.

I'd also love to see Z broadcast on cable, but I've been watching for it in vain for over a year. That's another one that may be just a little too close to home.
