Whoopi #4 show
Edited on Wed Sep-17-03 09:28 PM by nu_duer
I only caught a few minutes of her show, and it was funny - definite lack of bush reverence, and lack of reverence for the type of world he is trying to create.

And, instead of being shocked that anyone would dare not bow before the moron and his (Un)American Empire, America laughed along.

snip:
Whoopi Goldberg's new NBC sitcom, the singularly titled Whoopi, was the standout in the fresh-produce section. The show, with the onetime Oscar-winner punching the clock as a cantankerous hotel owner, was the fourth-most watched show of the week, sampled by 15.1 million, per Nielsen Media Research.
---------------
Makes me wonder how Jannene G. would do if her show got to go.

3. I won't be watching it again...

There WERE some funny parts, but I couldn't stand that crazy white girl or the stereotypical middle eastern guy (couldn't they give him some better lines - something funny to say that didn't involve his race?!)

4. I caught most of the last one
The high point for me was when she was watching Bush* on TV with her Freeper brother and she lost it because Bush* couldn't pronounce ``nuclear!'' LOL! If they continue to write bits like this, I hope that this show is around for awhile... :D

5. When is the re-run scheduled?
I work late Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but I remember seeing a re-run of the show last week. Can't recall when it was.

11. It's a fine line, but I think she can walk it.

Think about what happened when she encouraged Ted Danson to come out in black face. That went over the edge. However, in the show, she's playing a role. She can be anything she wants to be. And I think, what she's coming off as, is the Liberal's version of Archie Bunker. If she spouts off comments that are on other people's mind, then she provides a badly needed catalyst for open discussion. But if she goes for the predictable stereotypes -- without attempting to give the other side, then the show will fail.

She has an opportunity and I think the timing is right for what she's doing. When I was younger, I loved to watch Archie Bunker, even though I was too young to realize how endemic his opinions were in this country. I was naive enough to believe that, when his generation died off, so would the bigotry. Now, I think it's wrong to raise children with false hope that people will give them a fair shake out of the kindness of their hearts, when we know the deck is stacked against them. Better they know that early, and learn acceptable ways to cope with it.

12. They ran the first episode twice, hoping to reach a wider audience
It's not something that they will normally do. They will broadcast repeats when they finish airing new episodes, as with any sitcom, assuming that the show receives high enough ratings to be still around.

I used to work with the networks and am still surprised at some of the nonsensical decisions that they make. I think that they want to give this show the best possible chance and won't want to give up on it easily because of the calibre of its star, Whoopi Goldberg. I am sure that she made a special deal to commit to doing a series.

7. Here's a LINK of a piece on NPR on this show last week
http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=1426375

I thought the show might be entertaining though I haven't seen it at all though I must admit my interest was more to see the Omid Djalili in a different character...

Djalili was the surly and burly Prison warden in "The Mummy" who I thought was hilarious until the time he "departed"

The interview with him is pretty funny too...

8. Despite the jabs at *, I found it completely unfunny.
The white female character and the Middle Eastern male character are both embarrassments. I also got the sense thet Whoopi was "phoning it in": didn't seem connected to the role at all.

I dearly love Whoopi and was looking forward to this show. I'm disappointed now.

9. I thought the 2nd episode was funny as hell
I was hysterical at the mocking of stereotypes.
They made fun of the terror alerts too. I laughed through the whole thing.
