So I watched 'Harold and Maude' for the first time last night.....
Somehow I'd just never seen it. Everyone raves and raves and raves about this movie, so when I saw it on sale used at the video store, I just went ahead and bought it. I finally got around to watching it last night and...am I missing something here? Where was the funny? Isn't this supposed to be the funniest movie ever? I didn't even crack a smile. I thought it was fairly well-written, well-acted, and I can see how it's influenced other films. But funny? No. Not funny.

Bear in mind, I'm not Swahili. Is that the problem? What am I missing here?

2. It's a pretty good flick.
It's no "World According to Garp," but it's OK.

Last movie I rented was "Saved!" I could not recommend that one enough if yer headed back to the sto'.

Really? Someone doesn't like the Holy Grail? I think I speak for us all when I flatulate in that person's general direction.

4. I wouldn't describe it as funny or a comedy either.
I thoroughly enjoyed it though.

7. I think they call it "dark comedy".
And yes, there was plenty in there. How do you not find it funny all of Harold's fake suicide attempts and the reactions they elicit?!

8. Well obviously the humor is dark humor but the movie
isn't really supposed to be a "crack-up." It's more of an irony drawn of Harold's obsession with death mostly INSPIRED by his mother's insistence on creating his "happy" future...

You are obviously a Communist.
Well, that is my standard reply to those who don't see things the way I do.

It worked for McCarthy and Bush, right?

9. Harold and Maude is a human drama with some humor
Certainly not the funniest movie. I do find the scene where Harold's mother fills out the dating survey for him and his uncle with his missing limb rigged to salute to be pretty funny.

It is a true cult film by which I mean many either love it or hate it.
