Are there ANY decent free web space providers left out there?

Hey you guys are smart (well most of you ), I need help with something. I'm a bit fed up with Livejournal's inane posting limitations and wanted to whip up a page to post my fiction on. I have space with Verizon, but this is a shared account with my mom (home network), and well let's just say that with some of the content of my stories I would much rather have them on a different space (I really don't want to have to explain to my fundie Mom what slashfic is ). The problem is I have no idea where to look for a decent free webspace provider, as all the good ones seem to have upped and died during the dot-com collapse. I long for the days when I had my old Sailor Moon site on Redrival for free and no ads or popups...sigh.

Why don't I just get a pay thing? Because I don't want to. Finances are limited and this is just a hobby site.

Does anyone know of a good free one? Ideally there would be no ads but I know that's just a pipe dream now. So I'm willing to settle for something that just has minimal popups or ads. Space is not really an issue, I'm not posting a whole lot of fancy graphics or anything, just my writing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm also looking for html learning resources since what little I knew is gone, but first things first.

Another old Geocities person. Around '95 I had a Wicca-oriented site on there...those were the days.

Sometimes I really miss the old internets when they were just fun and nobody sent me spam.

4. oh yeah and

some hosts will host your domain for free for a year, as long as you order your domain from them (and a domain is only $9 or so)
try doteasy.com
They give you a reliable host with about 100MB of space and 1 gig of bandwidth a month, which is about right for a personal site.

3. Here are a few things to check

I was looking around recently and decided that cheap hosting for $4 a month would be more reliable than free hosting. With free hosting you are likely to get no support, various strings attached, and possibly heavy bandwidth fees of you go over their limit.
