In honor of Veteran's Day-three Army stories

First let me say that I fully respect our Veterans and my family has a long history of service.

One of my great uncles was in WWI and suffered from the effects of nerve gas his whole life.
My grandfather was in the glider corp, barely survived a mortar hit IN his foxhole (his three best friends died), and spent two years in Walter Reed.
My stepfather, one of his sons, and HIS son have all served in the Marines.
One of my uncles served in the Army during Korea (stateside)
One of my relatives served with great distinction in Afghanistan and another is currently in Fallujah.

So these are from my time in the Army,take these as you may:

1. STORY 1

This is a tale of a young man in love. I young far from his native land who had met and fallen for a young girl from his native land. This adoration, however, was not to be reciprocated as she had feelings for another.

Distraught the young man turned to the formented spirits. He told his new roommate to watch out for him as he was going to try to wash away his pain.

In the early morning hours this young man awoke to find his roommate performing oral sex on him. The young man’s friends worried about not seeing after some time and finally got the master key to open his door. The roommate was nowhere to be found and the young man was found naked, in the corner of the dark room, and in the fetal position.

He was sent to the “fourth floor” ( the local Army psych unit) and was later discharged from the Army, he was still but 17. The roommate was guard every minute of every day until he was transferred to another unit where he was summarily beaten and then given an early honorable discharge.

2. STORY 2

This is the tale of man versus beast. It was a dark night in the woods of Germany where a nation’s finest were training to better defend their country. As the firing went on myself and my driver (Bradley) were cleaning up after our perfect run when across the airwaves we heard the exchange of colleagues during their run.

In the dark of night the local creatures of the forest had ventured onto one of the pop-up targets making it too heavy for the motor to lift. In the dark their collective body heat replicated the image usually seen through the heat identifying view of the gunner.

To and fro the burning beasts lept. The ones that had not been killed initially were set afire by the scorching training rounds. In much haste the commanders were trying to cover this mistake before the natives found out about it and charged the US Army for the goats that had been killed and for every goat that those goats would have had and all the goats THOSE goats would have had and so on.

Being the crack team that we were my driver and I didn’t need to say anything to one another and we quickly closed up our vehicle and headed towards the sheet metal barracks to act like we were asleep and avoid what was coming.

Suddenly a voice cried out in the night, “Specialist! Specialist!”. I stopped and turned around and put up my hand and said, “Lt. don’t say anything I will get you two guys from 3rd platoon” (see he hadn’t actually given me an order yet). So off I went to get the screw-up who was always on the “shit list” and the new guy. Through the night they buried the goats and we left the range the next day….the Germans never knew what happened.

3. STORY 3

This is the tale of a serial rapist and murderer who used to visit a roommate of mine in our room. During the first great Gulf War we were under stoploss so we ended up with 4 soldiers living in a 10X10 room with four wall lockers and two bunk beds. I was 6 feet tall, one of my roommates was 6’4”, and another was 6’2”-the new guy was about 5’2”. At first wake up our newest roommate used to lay in bed until all the head knocking and knee banging was over. He literally would slip around our ankles and get dressed and leave the room as we fumbled around tried to each get dressed in a phone booth.

The new guy, we’ll call him K, had a friend from basic training, we’ll call him T. T would come by every once in a while and he and K would go hang out in someone else’s room. As there wasn't any room in ours and that T and K were black -so they generally hung out with other black soldiers while we white soldiers tended to hang out amongst our selves- the “two Armies” story is a whole other one.

One day coming out of the PX my best Army buddy and I noticed a flier asking about the disappearance of a young officer’s wife. We didn’t think much of it until a wife from our squadron was raped and barely fled from murder.

T and K had been transferred to another unit as we had traded tankers (our unit had just gotten tanks). We saw T from time to time and we would stop and ask how everything was going and such.

Long story short-K had joined the Army with a fake birth certificate and was wanted in Chicago for several rapes and murders.

7. Dealing with humanity at its worst is what makes veterans heroes.

You see us at our worst but do your jobs anyway.

Stories such as those need to be told.

8. Like I said I don't mean to smear Vets

It's just not all the golden haired superpatriots that is depicted but I understand why they do.

IT is a strange way to make a living. I did my 1,213 days and got out.
