Poll question: Favorite pop star
I vote for Madonna, but Michelle's very, very close behind. Love Avril and like Pink a lot, too. Don't care for the rest. Hilary Duff's music MAY grow on me, but I can't see that happening with artists like Britney, Christina, or 'N Sync. If I had to choose, Britney's my fave of those three.

If your favorite is "other" instead, post it. If you don't like any, well, to each his own. This is meant to be a positive board. :)

76. I like indie music.
But that doesn't mean there aren't "pop" artist I love as well. Being here in LA, I've been able to see more independent artists and it's shame that some of them are not getting the airplay they deserve. It's also a shame that some of those people that ARE getting airplay are on the radio at all.

THAT is my point. These kids just whine and pout about that evil corporate music!

85. Nawww!
But I've seen first hand how hard it is some people with talent get passed over for some of the crap that's on the radio. You either sell yourself (and sometimes your soul) over to the record company honchos or you bust your ass and starve to make it.

I admire the ones that won't sell out.

There ARE plenty of popular artist that DID pay their dues and made it. Madonna did. She made it in the business because she's smart and believed in herself.

Though Beyonce is nice looking, Ashanti's nice looking, Britney's pretty nice looking but her personality is a turnoff, and Avril's getting better.

Some pictures of Avril even before now looked really cute.

71. Amen!
Glad to see you put my unrequitted :loveya:love:loveya: Michelle Branch on the poll, mvd! :hi:

You're right on about the beautiful and talented bit! I'm not too much into today's pop music, but make an exception for Michelle Branch- and not just 'cause I think she's such a hottie. I've liked her stuff from the first time I heard "Everywhere".

While I can't say I care too much for anyone else in the poll (but will admit to liking a small amount of songs by several of them as "guilty pleasures") I respect anyone standing up for what they really like. My tastes tend to be fairly diverse if basically "mainstream" at the same time; some of my favorite bands are The Beatles, Pearl Jam, Soul Asylum, Chicago, Hall and Oates, Stone Temple Pilots, Jethro Tull, and The Doors. And as a fan of Uriah Heep, Styx, "Billy, Don't be a Hero", and Kasenatz-Katz bubblegum-psych, I've gotten used to defending my tastes quite a bit myself, and it's good to see you sticking up for the music you like, mvd, whether it's "cool" music to be a fan of or not!

I think think she's not tomorrow so far. Some people really hear good things in her music, but I haven't yet.

And she's way too young to be appreciated for attractiveness, so she's a wait and see all around.

16. Well, it matters to me, that's why I hate her
I'm sick of pre-fab little pop princesses trying to act like their heiresses to the throne of Exene. Avril doesn't have a punk bone in her disgustingly emaciated body, and I'm sick of her Monkee counterparts Good Charlotte too. Chris Rock said it best: "More like a mediocre Green Day." And even that's an insult to Green Day.

Corporate America needs to stop draping it's little fecal offspring in the garments of people who actually had talent and vision and cheapening the memory of bands I love. Everytime those assholes in Good Charlotte namecheck the Clash as if they actually listen to them, punk rock dies a little.

I have no issue with you liking her music, what I have a problem with is her corporate handlers marketing her as punk. If they want to make her another pop star like Titney, that's fine with me, but don't pretend she's Siouxsie Sioux 2003 or something. She's just another vapid teenage girl thrown out to appeal to the jailbait loving, Maxim reading men of this country.

Equal? Please. Green Day has never, even in their lowest lows, written anything as insipid and puke inducing as "Sk8r Boi". I'm not one of those punks who scream "SELL OUT" at Green Day, because I enjoyed their post-Kerplunk output, but Avril Lavigne is a completely different animal than Green Day. Christ, Green Day is the fucking Clash compared to that bimbette.

to ruin someone's fun (for no apparent reason) then it is my business. If you post on a thread expect anyone, not just the person you posted to, to reply. News flash- that's the way it works; like it or not. Obviously pop music is not your business, so perhaps you should take your own advice and mind your own, kid.

40. He honestly likes this music and so what?
I think I know MVD a lot better than you. I've known him for as long as I've been here (about a year and a half) and he's one of the things that makes the lounge a fun place to hang. Unlike people like you who cannot resist the temptation to make negative jabs at music you don't happen to like. Just what is the point of doing that? Why even come on this thread? It's obviously not directed at you. Oh, I know, in your High School world it makes you look cool. Well guess what? This isn't High School and if he wants to post a poll about music he likes, you don't need to come around and try to put a damper on it.

I can guarantee you he does NOT do this to get negative replies. A poll like this is usually made to find others who enjoy the same music and discuss it. His posts are genuine. If you don't like him (or his taste in music), then I suggest you do what he did to you and put him on ignore. Then you no longer have to be bothered with his threads. Oh, but that wouldn't be any fun, would it?

Not a color Sister is fond of. However, one time Sister Juana was doing the landry and threw in some of the red table cloths in with Rev Mother's formal white habbit.

You should have seen the look on the Bishop's face when Rev Mother showed up looking like a backup singer for James Brown.

32. As you say, its all taste
I'd disagree on your lyrics take - most rap is merely pop and rap and hip hop artists certainly smoke Madonna. I guess I would need to see some examples of a "ground-breaking" Madonna song to understand what you mean. The funny thing about pop music is, that by definition it is what is popular or well known. There are always a dozen or more other folks you never heard of that are doing things more inventive and just as well as your "ground-breaking" well known pop star.

Those are the folks I would rather support rather than continue to pump more money into the Madonna industry.

Madonna's have a good balance. I've been with her from the beginning and don't think she's lost much. Ray Of Light was as good as her earlier albums IMO.

35. First you need to understand...
..the difference between pushing buttons and pushing 'limits', among other things. Mundana and her 'shock troops/clone wannabes' excel ONLY in the former.

92. No dear
You act as if Las Vegas is a negative aspect. Sister loves Las Vegas. That charming Celine gal has a show there. From what I've heard it's lovely. Granted, Sister could be just as happy at an Red Hot Chili Pepper's show, but give this ol' penguin a flashy Vegas show and slots and you've got one happy nun.

Now, if those chili pepper boys would show up at the convent all hot and sweaty and tatooed. You paint the picture dears, some of you might want to change the station.

Sister likes that song about the sun coming up over Santa Monica Blvd. When Sister was younger, that was my stomping grounds. Not a day would go by that you wouldn't see us zipping down the street in the Nun-mobile heading towards the beach.

SURF'S UP!

;-)

Ok, I have to go for now. Just wanted to create this, and because of the responses, stay and defend my like of the kind of music. Music is subjective, and all the debate in the world can't make someone like or dislike artists.

It's something I like, and I'm proud of it.

Last halloween she played the street fair in West Hollywood. The cool part was that the stage was set up right at the end of my street. We got to watch her whole show from our deck.

87. YES!
I dragged my pop-luvin' wife to her first Flaming Lips show and they played the Kylie cover. She was blown away by the whole show, but I think that's what made her a fan...then she snagged all my Lips CDs for her car.

I love my wife, but I want my records back, dammit.

75. I see the whiney indie/alt music kids are out today!
...I see the indie/alt music snobs are out today whining about the evil corporate pop music.

Its really kind of sad. Everyone has their favorite kind of music but its only these types who bash what others like.

Why is that?

I mean, they revel in the fact that their music is obscure, insist that if more people get turned on to it, the quality suffers (weird logic) and the artists sell out, yet they WANT others to notice their music. Kind of self defeating.

"pop" music is short for "popular" by the way.

89. Can you PROVE that?
Edited on Tue Sep-16-03 07:58 PM by wyldwolf
... I mean, what was the excuse BEFORE clear channel came into being?

bwah haha (sniff!) That EVIL corporate music! boo hoooo!

Clear Channel doesn't own a single pop music station where I live.

Let's see. The company bought their first station in 1972. Was that when music went bad?

They bought their next one in 1975. A small AM station. Was that when pop music began to be controlled by Clear Channel?

In 1986, they increased their holdings to 12 stations in 7 small and medium markets. Perhaps now is when Clear Channel began that evil influence!

Maybe it was 1995 when their assets grew to 45 stations. Hmmm... 45 stations controlling the state of pop music? Doubtful. No! Laughable!

In 2000, their stable grew to 625 stations worldwide. That's world wide. Was the diabolical scheme hatched then?

Wait! Clear Channel's CHR holdings (CHR is the format that plays pop) is about 8%. Which is a drop in the bucket among the countless pop music stations world wide.

It seems they excert much more influence over classic rock, rock, and country stations.

95. Celine Dion is no longer considered Pop.
She's now Adult contemporary. No one listens to her. She sounds like a screaming cat, or a cat in heat, which ever you prefer. SHe gives me migranes. They play her stuff where I get my nails done. I brought them a Nora Jones CD yesterday so they wouldn't feel the need to have to listen to that Celine BS. It's like Nails on a chalkboard.
